Elderly Patient Found With Bruises at Carletonville Hospital

The family of Elizabeth Fosa (87) from Khutsong South is demanding answers after their loved one was discharged from Carletonville Hospital with severe bruises on her legs. The elderly woman, who was admitted for breathing difficulties, returned home in a condition that left her family both heartbroken and outraged.

A Shocking Discovery

Fosa was taken to Carletonville Hospital by ambulance when she struggled to breathe. Her family ensured that a relative checked on her daily, making sure she was fed and bathed. However, when she was discharged on February 25, the family was horrified to find large, dark bruises covering her left thigh, as well as the inside of both thighs.

“I went to pick her up and was shocked by how she looked. None of the staff could answer what caused them,” a family member said.

Even more concerning, Fosa is unable to speak, meaning she cannot explain what happened to her during her hospital stay. More than a week after her release, the bruises were still visible, raising serious concerns about her treatment at the facility.

Hospital Investigation Underway

After the family raised their concerns, the matter was escalated to Carletonville Hospital’s communication officer, Matabo Letsoalo. In response, the hospital stated that an official investigation is underway.

“Carletonville Hospital acknowledges receipt of your media enquiry and we have since contacted the family as per our complaints management processes in the hospital. We are currently investigating the allegations raised by the family, and a redress meeting will be arranged with the family as soon as investigations are completed.”

According to the hospital, the ward’s operational manager had previously spoken with Fosa’s daughter while she was still in the hospital regarding the patient’s condition before discharge. Furthermore, the family was contacted on February 27 about Fosa’s next hospital appointment, which was scheduled for April.

Community Outrage and Calls for Transparency

Fosa’s case has sparked concern among the local community, with many questioning the standard of care at Carletonville Hospital. Elderly patients, particularly those who are unable to communicate, are among the most vulnerable in the healthcare system. Families trust hospitals to provide safe and compassionate care, and cases like this shake public confidence.

The Carletonville hospital has encouraged the community to raise concerns or complaints directly with operational managers of the wards they visit. However, some residents argue that more accountability and transparency are needed when such incidents occur.

Elder Abuse and Neglect in Healthcare Facilities

Cases of elderly patients suffering unexplained injuries while under medical care are not uncommon. Bruises, bedsores, malnutrition, and other signs of neglect or mistreatment can indicate poor care practices or abuse in healthcare facilities.

Some possible explanations for Fosa’s condition could include:

  • Rough handling during patient transfers or medical procedures.
  • Prolonged immobility, leading to pressure sores and bruising.
  • Accidental falls that were not properly reported to the family.
  • Neglect or physical mistreatment by hospital staff.

However, without a clear explanation from the hospital, the family remains deeply concerned about how and why Fosa sustained these injuries.

What Should Families Do in Similar Cases?

If a loved one is discharged from a healthcare facility with unexplained injuries, families should take the following steps:

  1. Document the injuries – Take clear photographs of any bruises, wounds, or other concerning signs.
  2. Request medical records – Hospitals are required to keep detailed records of a patient’s condition and treatment.
  3. Speak to hospital management – Raise concerns directly with the ward’s operational manager or the hospital complaints department.
  4. Seek legal advice – If injuries indicate neglect or abuse, legal action may be necessary.
  5. Raise awareness – Reporting incidents to local media and community forums can help pressure hospitals into improving patient care.

A Call for Accountability

As the investigation at Carletonville Hospital continues, the Fosa family demands answers and accountability. They want to ensure that other elderly patients do not suffer similar experiences and that the hospital takes measures to prevent future incidents.

The case highlights the importance of holding healthcare facilities accountable for patient safety and ensuring that all individuals—especially vulnerable elderly patients—receive proper care and respect.

For now, Fosa’s family is left with unanswered questions, hoping the hospital will provide clarity and justice for their beloved grandmother.
