Severe Storms and Flooding Expected in Gauteng, Limpopo, and Mpumalanga
The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a severe weather alert for Thursday, 27 March 2025, warning of heavy thunderstorms and potential flooding in three provinces—Gauteng, Limpopo, and Mpumalanga. Residents in these areas are advised to take necessary precautions as widespread rain and storms are expected to impact daily activities and increase flood risks.
Today’s Weather Warnings
SAWS has issued a Yellow Level 2 warning for:
- Gauteng, the South-Western Bushveld in Limpopo, and the Highveld of Mpumalanga: Heavy rainfall may lead to localized flooding of roads, low-lying bridges, and vulnerable settlements.
- The northeastern parts of KwaZulu-Natal: Disruptive rain may result in flooding and travel disruptions.
Additionally, extremely high fire danger conditions are expected in the Northern Cape’s Hantam Municipality due to dry and hot weather conditions.
Provincial Weather Breakdown
- Gauteng: Cloudy and cool-to-warm weather with widespread showers and thundershowers.
- Mpumalanga: Cloudy and cool to warm, with scattered to widespread thunderstorms.
- Limpopo: Cloudy and warm, with scattered showers and thunderstorms in the south.
- North West & Free State: Partly cloudy with isolated to scattered showers, but widespread rain in the east.
- Northern Cape: Fine and warm, except for isolated thunderstorms in the east.
- KwaZulu-Natal: Cloudy and cool with widespread showers and thunderstorms, especially in the northeast.
- Eastern & Western Cape: Mostly clear, with isolated showers in some areas.
Safety Precautions for Residents
- Avoid crossing flooded roads or bridges.
- Stay indoors during thunderstorms and unplug electrical appliances.
- Secure loose outdoor items to prevent wind damage.
- Motorists should drive cautiously as roads may be slippery and waterlogged.
