The highly anticipated Omoda C7, positioned between the C5 and C9 in the Chery-owned brand’s lineup, is set to arrive in South Africa later this year. Having made its global debut at Chery’s annual future product media event in China last year, the C7 recently had its first public showing in Thailand at the Bangkok Motor Show.
Impressive Range and Powertrain
Previously kept under wraps, the coupe-styled Omoda C7 will be available with both a conventional combustion engine and a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) option. However, details of the latter have only recently emerged, revealing an advanced hybrid powertrain that combines a 1.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine with an electric motor and battery pack.

The hybrid system mirrors that of the upcoming Jaecoo J7 PHEV, featuring a petrol engine that delivers 115 kW and 230 Nm, while the electric motor—powered by an 18.3-kWh lithium iron phosphate battery, reportedly supplied by BYD—produces 150 kW and 310 Nm. The combined system output reaches an impressive 265 kW and 530 Nm, enabling the C7 to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 8.5 seconds. With an all-electric range of 95 km and a total range of approximately 1,250 km when utilizing both power sources, the C7 PHEV is set to offer remarkable efficiency and performance.
Export-Focused Model
Reports indicate that the Omoda C7 has been specifically developed for key international markets, with no plans for it to be offered in China under the Omoda or Jaecoo branding. In China, similar models are marketed under Chery’s other sub-brands, such as Exeed and iCar.

Features and Technology
On the technology front, the C7 showcased in Thailand boasts a freestanding instrument cluster, a segment-first 15.6-inch digital display, and a premium 14-speaker Sony sound system. Additionally, it includes physical steering wheel controls for enhanced usability. Other expected features include a fragrance dispenser, active noise cancellation with speaker integration in the front headrests, and a quad-zone climate control system.

While Malaysia is expected to receive the Omoda C7 in 2026, South Africa will see its arrival later this year. Though final specifications are yet to be confirmed, industry estimates suggest a price range between R550,000 and R700,000.
