A devastating N1 crash near Mabopane, Pretoria North, has claimed four lives and left several others injured. The accident, which occurred on Monday morning, involved a passenger bus travelling from Malawi to Gauteng and a diesel tanker truck.
Scene of the Tragedy
Tshwane Emergency Services Department spokesperson Lindsay Zwelithini Mnguni confirmed that the collision was reported just after 7 a.m. Emergency responders arrived to find both the bus and the fuel tanker engulfed in flames. Despite firefighters’ swift response, the vehicles were extensively damaged.

Casualties and Injuries
A total of 118 individuals were affected by the accident, including 117 bus passengers and the tanker driver. Tragically, four people died on the scene.
- One patient sustained critical injuries.
- Eight others suffered minor to severe injuries.
- The remaining 104 passengers were unharmed.
Emergency services transported the injured victims to Bela-Bela Hospital and Jubilee District Hospital for further medical care.
Investigation Underway
Authorities, including the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the National Traffic Police, managed the scene, closing the N1 in both directions to ensure safety. The cause of the accident has not yet been determined.
This tragedy follows another fatal bus crash near OR Tambo International Airport earlier this month, which claimed 14 lives and injured 77 others.
Authorities urge motorists to exercise caution on South Africa’s highways, especially as investigations continue into the cause of these recent bus crashes.
