Bafana Bafana secured a crucial 2-0 victory over Benin in their CAF 2026 World Cup Qualifier at Stade Félix Houphouët-Boigny in Abidjan. The result strengthens South Africa’s position at the top of Group C and brings them a step closer to World Cup qualification.
A Dominant Performance
South Africa started strongly, dictating possession and creating multiple chances in the first half. While Benin’s defence held firm, Bafana Bafana’s high press and quick transitions kept their opponents on the back foot. The first half ended goalless, but South Africa had shown more attacking intent.
Foster Breaks the Deadlock
The breakthrough came in the 53rd minute when Lyle Foster capitalised on a well-worked move. A superb long ball found Fawaaz Basadien on the left flank, who delivered a low cross into the six-yard box. Foster reacted quickest, poking the ball past the Benin goalkeeper, with the ball ricocheting off the post before rolling over the line.
Adams Seals the Win
As Benin pushed forward in search of an equaliser, Bafana Bafana remained disciplined at the back. Then, in the 85th minute, Appollis delivered a pinpoint free-kick into the box, where Jayden Adams rose highest to head the ball into the net. The goal sealed a well-deserved win for South Africa.
Defensive Solidity and Tactical Discipline
Bafana Bafana’s defensive organisation was exceptional, with Ngezana and Sibisi marshalling the backline effectively. Williams made an important save in the first half, denying Dokou from close range, while the midfield duo of Aubaas and Mbatha controlled the tempo. Percy Tau and Mofokeng also caused problems for Benin’s defence with their movement.
Looking Ahead
With this victory, South Africa extends their lead in Group C, edging closer to automatic qualification. Their strong form and disciplined performances under Hugo Broos continue to make them one of the favourites in the group.
Bafana Bafana will now shift their focus to their next qualifier, hoping to maintain their momentum and secure a spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
