DStv Price Increases for 2025: What Subscribers Need to Know

You may have heard that DStv prices will be increasing again in 2025. If you’re anything like the majority of South Africans, then you might be wondering why. How much will it cost me? Is it worth it?

  • Why will DStv be increasing prices in 2025?
  • How much more will you pay?
  • What does this mean for you?
  • How to cut costs without losing access
  • What is the bigger picture? Are price increases fair?
  • What should you do?

MultiChoice (the company behind DStv) has announced that the subscription fee will be increasing from 1 May 2025. Why is DStv increasing?

What does it mean to you, the average viewer? Here’s a simple breakdown to help you decide what your next step should be.

Why will DStv be increasing prices in 2025?

MultiChoice has explained the main reasons behind the price increase.

1. VAT Increase

You may have heard that SARS, the South African Revenue Service, is raising VAT from 15% to 15.5% starting April 1, 2025. Businesses, such as DStv will need to adjust their prices to reflect the new tax rate

3. The cost of producing content is rising

You may enjoy local shows such as The River and Gomora. It’s not cheap to produce high-quality content. DStv invests heavily in local productions as well as exclusive rights to sports, increasing their operating costs. The company claims that the increase in price will maintain service reliability and content quality.

How much more will you pay?

What does this mean for you?

If you’re already struggling to pay your bills, a price increase could make you reconsider your subscription.

1. You may need to adjust your budget

It may not seem much to spend a few more rands each month, but when the economy is tough, every penny counts. Plan ahead if you rely on DStv to entertain you.

2. Is Streaming a Better Alternative?

Some subscribers have decided to abandon DStv entirely because platforms such as Netflix, Showmax and Disney+ offer affordable alternatives. Switching to streaming services could be a great way to save money if you watch mainly series and movies.

3. Look out for Deals and Promotions

DStv offers many promotional deals, particularly for bundles with Showmax and internet providers. It’s worth looking into discounts if you are determined to keep your subscription.

How to cut costs without losing access

Here are some ways you can save money if you don’t want to cancel DStv, but still want to manage your costs:

1. Downgrade your package

Many people pay for Premium but watch the channels that are available in Compact. Consider a lower-cost package if you don’t use the additional perks.

2. Pay annually instead of monthly

Customers can receive a discount if they pay for the entire year in advance. This is a good way to lock in lower rates if you can afford it.

3. Consider Streaming Only Packages

DStv offers reduced-rate subscriptions for streaming only. This could be an affordable option if you have a high-speed internet connection.

What is the bigger picture? Are price increases fair?

News is not received well by everyone. MultiChoice was sued by Nigeria’s consumer protection agency after it raised prices despite regulatory concerns. The case has sparked debates about whether subscription services should be subject to stricter price controls.

MultiChoice is the leader in South Africa’s live sports broadcasting market. While some viewers will cancel their subscriptions, others will stay because of the exclusive content such as SuperSport.

What should you do?

Entertainment costs continue to rise, and no end is in sight. You may have to accept an increase if you enjoy local and live shows. If you’re looking to save money, this is the time to look at other options.
