Joburg Emergency Services on High Alert

Johannesburg emergency services are on high alert as the South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a yellow level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms and disruptive rain across Gauteng. The adverse weather conditions could result in localized flooding, damage to infrastructure, and significant traffic congestion throughout the province.

Severe Weather Alert for Gauteng

Gauteng, along with other provinces including Mpumalanga, Limpopo, North West, Free State, Northern Cape, and Western Cape, has been warned to brace for heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and potential flash floods in low-lying areas.

The yellow level 2 warning indicates a moderate risk of severe weather, meaning that while conditions are not extreme, they still pose a danger to residents, motorists, and businesses.

According to SAWS, the most at-risk areas include:

  • Mpumalanga escarpment
  • Western parts of KwaZulu-Natal
  • North-eastern Northern Cape

In these areas, flooding of informal settlements, property damage, and disruptions to livelihoods and livestock are expected.

Johannesburg Emergency Services on Standby

The Johannesburg Emergency Management Services (EMS), led by spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi, has confirmed that they are closely monitoring the situation.

“So far, no major incidents have been reported overnight and this morning throughout the city of Johannesburg due to severe thunderstorms. We still remain on high alert, monitoring all seven regions of the city,” said Mulaudzi.

Precautionary Measures in Place

Emergency services are working alongside disaster management teams and the aquatic rescue unit to respond to water-related emergencies such as flooding and stranded motorists.

Mulaudzi urged residents, especially those in low-lying areas, to avoid crossing rivers and flooded bridges. Motorists have also been advised to exercise caution while driving, as roads could become dangerously slippery and flooded.

Key Safety Tips for Residents:

✔️ Avoid crossing flooded roads or bridges – Fast-moving water can easily sweep away vehicles and pedestrians.
✔️ Stay indoors if possible – Minimize travel and avoid unnecessary exposure to severe weather.
✔️ Check drainage systems – Clear blocked gutters and storm drains to prevent water buildup.
✔️ Prepare for power outages – Severe storms often lead to electricity disruptions. Keep backup power sources ready.
✔️ Secure outdoor items – High winds can turn loose objects into dangerous projectiles.

Weather Conditions Across South Africa

The severe weather is not limited to Gauteng. Other provinces are also experiencing disruptive rain and thunderstorms:

  • Mpumalanga – Cloudy with scattered showers and thundershowers. Morning fog patches expected along the escarpment.
  • Limpopo – Isolated showers and thundershowers, especially in the escarpment areas.
  • North West & Free State – Cool to warm conditions with isolated showers and thundershowers.
  • Northern Cape – Cloudy in the east, partly cloudy and hot elsewhere. Isolated thunderstorms expected.
  • Western Cape – Cloudy and cool to warm, with light rainfall in the morning and scattered showers in the afternoon.
  • KwaZulu-Natal – Morning fog over the interior, followed by isolated showers and thundershowers, more concentrated in the western and southern regions.

Flash Flood Risk and Traffic Disruptions

The anticipated flash floods in Johannesburg pose a serious risk to motorists and commuters. With heavy rain expected throughout the day, major roads and highways could experience waterlogging, making travel dangerous.

Authorities have issued the following road safety guidelines:

  • Drive slowly and maintain a safe following distance.
  • Avoid flooded areas and find alternative routes.
  • Check real-time traffic updates before traveling.

With Gauteng and other provinces facing severe weather conditions, Johannesburg Emergency Services remain on high alert to manage potential emergencies. Residents are urged to stay vigilant, follow safety precautions, and report any emergencies immediately.

As weather conditions continue to evolve, staying informed and prepared is crucial in minimizing risks and ensuring public safety. Monitor SAWS updates and emergency services for the latest alerts.
