How to Reverse an FNB eWallet Payment in 2025 – Step-by-Step Guide & Key Tips
SHARE

Imagine you’ve sent money through FNB eWallet and then realized that you made a mistake. You may have typed the wrong number on your cellphone or sent more than you intended. You feel your heart skip a beat and panic sets in. What do you do? You don’t know how to reverse an FNB eWallet. You’re not the only one who has made this mistake. These mistakes happen more than you think. Fortunately, there are solutions to these problems.

This guide will show you how to reverse an FNB eWallet in 2025. We’ve collected practical steps to help you navigate through this stressful situation.

Why mistakes happen with FNB eWallet

FNB eWallet offers one of the simplest ways to send money within South Africa. Transferring money to someone with a mobile number is possible, even if the recipient does not have a bank. The recipient can then withdraw the money from an FNB branch or ATM.

With speed comes the possibility of errors.

  • Incorrect recipient: you accidentally sent money to the incorrect number.
  • Wrong amount: you meant to send R500, but typed R5,000.
  • Fraudulent transactions: You lose your phone and someone gets access to your electronic wallet.

Don’t panic if any of these situations sound familiar. You can still reverse the transaction.

How to Reverse an FNB eWallet Payment: Step-by-Step Guide

The timing is crucial. The earlier you act, then the greater the chances of recovering your money.

1. You can reverse the payment yourself (USSD method)

You might be able to reverse the transaction yourself if you haven’t withdrawn any money yet:

  1. Dial *121*320# on your phone.
  2. Select the ‘Send money’ option (option 4).
  3. Select ‘eWallet Reversal‘ (option 5).
  4. Select the transaction that you wish to reverse.
  5. Follow the prompts to confirm the reversal.

Pro tip: You can only use this option if you have 72 hours to do so and if your recipient has not withdrawn any funds.

2. FNB Banking App

Here’s how to use the app if you prefer it:

  1. Log in to the FNB Banking App.
  2. Select ‘eWallet” from the ‘Payments‘ menu.
  3. Select ‘Transaction History‘ and choose the transaction that you want to reverse.
  4. Click on ‘Reverse‘ and follow the instructions.

This option works the same as the USSD, but only if you haven’t withdrawn the money yet.

3. Contact FNB Customer Service

When self-service doesn’t work it’s best to contact the experts.

  • Dial 087 575 9405 for FNB customer support.
  • Enter the details for your transaction (amount and date)
  • Explain the error clearly and ask for a reversal.

Expert advice: Support agents at FNB deal with this issue every day. The sooner you notify the FNB, the better.

4. Visit a FNB Branch

You can also visit an FNB branch if all else fails.

  • Use the FNB Website to find your nearest branch.
  • Contact a consultant to explain your situation.
  • Please provide identification as well as proof of transaction.

This method is time-consuming but ensures that you receive personal assistance.

What If the Money Has Already Been Withdrawn?

It’s a hard fact: If the recipient already has the money, it is nearly impossible to reverse the payment. You can only ask the recipient to return the money in this situation. Report the fraud to FNB and open a police investigation if you suspect it.

Avoiding Future eWallet Mistakes

Here are some simple ways to reduce future stress:

  • Double-check recipient details: Verify the recipient’s cellphone number before you send money.
  • Send Confirmation: Certain transactions are available for previewing before finalisation.
  • Enable notifications: Set up SMS or app alerts for real-time monitoring of transactions.

It’s not guaranteed that you can reverse an FNB eWallet transaction, but if you act quickly, it will give you the best chance. Knowing your options, whether you’re using USSD, an app, customer support, or visiting a branch can save you money and time.

Follow these steps as soon as you can if you find yourself in a similar situation. To ensure your peace of mind, double-check all information before sending.
