Swift Police Action Leads to Arrests and Recovery of Stolen Cash
Six suspects have been arrested just hours after a daring cash-in-transit (CIT) heist in Vanderbijlpark, south of Johannesburg. The robbery took place on Saturday while a cash van was loading money at an ATM.
Robbery Details
Police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi confirmed that armed robbers ambushed security guards at gunpoint, making off with an undisclosed amount of cash.
“They accosted the security guards, robbing them at gunpoint with a rifle and a pistol before fleeing the scene in an Audi A3 and a Toyota Quantum. No shots were fired, and no injuries were reported,” said Nevhuhulwi.
Swift Arrests and Seizures
Acting swiftly, a specialized police team, including Sedibeng K9, Public Order Policing, and the CIT task team, traced the suspects to a house in Evaton.
Authorities successfully arrested six individuals and recovered the stolen money along with three pistols, one rifle, five cellphones, and the getaway vehicles used in the crime.
“The suspects will appear before the Vanderbijlpark Magistrate’s Court on charges of armed robbery and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition,” added Nevhuhulwi.
Gauteng Police Commissioner Praises Swift Action
Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni, Gauteng’s Provincial Police Commissioner, commended officers for their rapid response.
“The swift arrests ensured that the suspects were found still in possession of the stolen goods,” said Mthombeni.
Recent Sandton Shooting Under Investigation
Meanwhile, police are investigating a separate incident in Sandton, where three people were shot dead, and four others injured at Solo restaurant last week. Investigators have recovered four firearms, including two high-calibre rifles.
Authorities continue to urge the public to report any suspicious activities as law enforcement intensifies efforts to combat crime in Gauteng.
