Five Fascinating Facts About Lesotho – The Country Trump Claims ‘Nobody Has Heard Of’

The Hidden Gems of Lesotho: A Landlocked Kingdom with a Rich Legacy

Facts About Lesotho: US President Donald Trump’s recent comments about Lesotho being a country “nobody has ever heard of” sparked global surprise. While many were taken aback by his remarks, Lesotho is a unique and intriguing nation with its own rich history and culture.

Located in Southern Africa, this landlocked country, completely surrounded by South Africa, is often overlooked on the international stage. Let’s dive into five fascinating facts about Lesotho that highlight its significance in the global landscape.

Interesting Facts About Lesotho

1. The Kingdom in the Sky

Lesotho is often referred to as the “Kingdom in the Sky,” due to its breathtaking mountainous terrain. The entire country lies at a higher elevation than any other in the world, with its lowest point sitting at 1,400 meters above sea level. It is the only independent state entirely situated above 1,000 meters in elevation.

This dramatic landscape makes it a haven for adventure lovers and outdoor enthusiasts, offering opportunities for hiking, trekking, and even skiing in the winter months. The country’s famous Matekane Airstrip is considered one of the most dangerous runways in the world, as planes must navigate sharp mountainous drops on both ends of the runway.

2. Completely Surrounded by South Africa

Lesotho’s unique geographical positioning makes it entirely landlocked within South Africa. While separated by imposing mountain ranges, the country’s proximity to its southern neighbor has fostered strong cultural and linguistic ties between the two nations.

The majority of the population speaks Sesotho, which is also one of South Africa’s 12 official languages. However, Lesotho’s rugged highlands and limited arable land leave its people dependent on South Africa for employment and food supplies. Over the years, many Basotho citizens have migrated to South Africa in search of better opportunities.

3. Lesotho’s Biggest Resource – ‘White Gold’

Despite its challenging geography, Lesotho has valuable resources that make it a key player in the region. Its most significant resource is water, known locally as “white gold.” Lesotho exports vast amounts of water to South Africa, which relies on the country’s rivers for its own water supply.

In addition to water, Lesotho also has abundant diamond reserves, which contribute to its economy through mining operations. These resources, while vital, also highlight the country’s dependence on its larger neighbour.

4. A Legacy of Royalty and Charity

Lesotho is a constitutional monarchy with a royal family that holds significant cultural importance. The current king, Letsie III, and his younger brother Prince Seeiso are well-respected figures in the nation. Prince Seeiso, in particular, has a close relationship with Prince Harry of the United Kingdom.

Together, they co-founded the charity Sentebale, which works to support young people in Lesotho who are affected by HIV/AIDS. Prince Harry’s long-standing commitment to Lesotho highlights the nation’s struggle with HIV/AIDS, a crisis the country continues to fight with the help of international aid.

5. A Global Denim Exporter

You might be surprised to learn that Lesotho plays a significant role in the global clothing industry. Known as the “denim capital of Africa,” Lesotho is one of the largest exporters of jeans and textiles to the United States.

Through the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), Lesotho exports millions of dollars worth of clothing every year, with brands like Levi’s and Wrangler manufacturing their jeans in Lesotho’s garment factories. These factories are often owned by foreign investors, including Chinese and Taiwanese nationals, contributing to the country’s growing role in the international fashion market.

While Lesotho may not be on everyone’s radar, this small nation is rich in history, culture, and resources that make it an important player in Africa. From its towering highlands to its strategic role in global textiles and its close relationship with the UK royal family, Lesotho is far more than just a country “nobody has ever heard of.”
