An Ekurhuleni male nurse denied bail by the Nigel Magistrate’s Court is facing serious allegations of rape and sexual assault involving two young male victims. The accused, who previously worked at a Netcare private hospital in Springs, allegedly preyed on a 17-year-old patient and a 19-year-old man.
Ekurhuleni Male Nurse Denied Bail Amid Rape and Assault Charges
During his formal bail application, the male nurse accused of rape and assault insisted that he was in a consensual relationship with the 17-year-old victim. However, the state opposed bail, arguing that he manipulated the teenager, who was financially vulnerable and unable to afford further medical care.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) regional spokesperson, Lumka Mahanjana, the accused also failed to provide an alternative address, making him a flight risk. Magistrate Rakesh Chitradow ruled that no exceptional circumstances warranted his release, leading to the denial of bail. The case has been postponed to 31 March 2025 for further investigation.
Allegations Against the Ekurhuleni Male Nurse
The male nurse accused of rape and assault was employed at a Netcare private hospital in Springs in August 2023 when the 17-year-old boy was admitted for a medical procedure. During his hospital stay, the nurse allegedly began making advances towards him.
When the teen’s medical aid funds were depleted, he was discharged from the hospital. The Ekurhuleni male nurse then allegedly promised to continue providing medical care and medication at the victim’s home.
Reports indicate that the accused would visit the teenager, offer him medication, and then convince him to take a drive. He would then park in a nearby veld, where he allegedly sexually assaulted and raped the boy on multiple occasions.
Community Intervention Leads to Arrest
The accused’s actions came to light when concerned community members noticed his car parked in the veld with different boys on several occasions. On 12 February 2025, they confronted him and alerted the police.
Authorities arrived and took both the victim and the accused to the police station, where the 17-year-old disclosed the abuse. While at the station, another 19-year-old victim came forward, alleging that he too had been sexually assaulted by the same nurse.
Legal Proceedings and Next Steps
Following the court’s decision to deny bail, the accused remains in custody as police continue their investigation. The prosecution maintains that the male nurse accused of rape and assault took advantage of vulnerable individuals and could pose a risk to other potential victims if released.
The case will resume on 31 March 2025, and more details are expected to emerge regarding the allegations and the victims’ testimonies.
Public Reaction and Community Safety Concerns
The case has sparked public outrage, particularly within the Ekurhuleni community, with many expressing concerns about predatory behavior in healthcare settings. Authorities urge victims of sexual abuse to come forward and report such crimes to ensure justice is served.
The Ekurhuleni male nurse denied bail continues to face serious rape and sexual assault charges, with mounting evidence against him. As investigations progress, the case highlights the importance of safeguarding vulnerable individuals, particularly in medical environments. The court’s decision to deny bail ensures that the accused remains in custody as the legal process unfolds.
