Free Wi-Fiat Rea Vaya Stations: The City of Johannesburg has taken a major step toward digital inclusivity by rolling out free Wi-Fi at 25 Rea Vaya Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) stations. This initiative is part of the city’s broader strategy to integrate municipal Wi-Fi networks under a single, seamless platform called Joburg Free Wi-Fi.

One of the key aspects of this initiative is the introduction of a universal service set identifier (SSID). This means that users no longer need to switch between different networks when moving between Rea Vaya stations, Metrobus hubs, Wits University, libraries, and other municipal spaces. According to Neani Mulaudzi, General Manager of Network Operations at the Metropolitan Trading Company, there has been “notable success” in activating Wi-Fi across BRT stations, but theft and power cuts remain obstacles beyond their control. Mulaudzi has urged the community to help protect these facilities, emphasizing that free Wi-Fi benefits everyone, particularly students, job seekers, and small businesses.

Transport MMC Kenny Kunene highlighted that the high cost of mobile data in South Africa remains a significant barrier for many people.
