Orlando Pirates winger Monnapule Saleng has officially rejoined the club’s first-team training after being sidelined for months. The 26-year-old, who last featured for the Buccaneers in December during a CAF Champions League match against Al Ahly, had been absent from club duties for an extended period. His return marks a significant development in his career, especially after a turbulent few months.
Bafana Bafana Opportunity and Squad Changes
Saleng recently got a chance to return to competitive action when he represented Bafana Bafana in the CHAN qualifiers. This was his first match in three months, showcasing his abilities despite his lengthy absence. However, after playing in the 1-1 draw against Egypt, Bafana B coach Molefi Ntseki made the decision to release four players, including Saleng, from the squad ahead of the return leg in Cairo.
SAFA media confirmed that along with Saleng, his Pirates teammate Azola Tshobeni, Kaizer Chiefs’ Naledi Hlongwane, and Golden Arrows’ Nduduzo Mhlongo were also sent back to their respective clubs. In their place, TS Galaxy striker Victor Letsoalo and Royal AM’s Mondli Mpoto and Levy Mashiane were called up to strengthen the squad.
The Circumstances Behind Monnapule Saleng’s Release
Despite performing well in the first leg, Saleng’s exclusion from the travelling squad raised questions. It was revealed that prior to joining the national team, Saleng had not been training with Orlando Pirates and was instead spending time at home in Boitumelong, Bloemhof. He had driven himself to Bloemfontein to join Bafana Bafana and later returned home after the match.
The Bafana B squad regrouped in Johannesburg before their departure to Egypt, but by Wednesday, Saleng had yet to report to the camp. Given his situation, the coaching staff decided to leave him out of the travelling squad, with sources close to the player suggesting that he has been mentally affected by his situation at Pirates.
Will Saleng Feature for Orlando Pirates Again?
With his return to Pirates’ training, there is speculation about whether Saleng will be reintegrated into the squad for upcoming matches. The Buccaneers are set to face their next challenge in the Nedbank Cup quarter-final at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium this weekend. Fans will be eager to see if the talented winger gets a chance to prove himself once again after months on the sidelines.

Saleng’s struggles in recent months have been well documented, but his return to training could signal a fresh start. The coming weeks will determine if he can reclaim his spot in the Pirates lineup and regain his best form.
