March SASSA Grants
The payment of the March SASSA (South African Social Security Agency) grants has been met with frustration and confusion, as many beneficiaries report issues with receiving their funds. With the replacement of the SASSA Gold Card in progress, some recipients are unsure where to collect their payments, while others claim that their funds have not reflected in their accounts.

March SASSA Grants Payment Dates
SASSA confirmed the following payment dates for March 2025:
- Older Persons’ Grants – 4 March
- Disability Grants – 5 March
- Child Support Grants – 6 March
While payments have started, several beneficiaries have taken to social media to express their struggles in accessing their grants, particularly those who recently replaced their old SASSA Gold Cards with new payment options.
Beneficiaries Share Their Frustration
Many affected recipients have shared their experiences on social media platforms like X (formerly Twitter), highlighting their difficulties:
- @ItsMrPaulD: “The new black cards are declining, but the money has been subtracted. This is for Older Pension grants today.”
- @puja_s27: “Nobody wants to help. Elderly people were told to go to SASSA Offices, then sent to Postbank, but all post offices are closed. Now they are told to go back where the new cards were issued. Headless chickens making senior citizens suffer.”
- @Nunus62994065: “My mother got a new black card last month. Her card is not working. No money in her card. Called @africanbank, they don’t know. So no pay for her?”
- @Oh_really25: “How do you implement things such as the new black card but it doesn’t work? And you don’t make it easy for pensioners. These things need to be thought out properly before launching.”
Many beneficiaries who were promised seamless transitions to the new black SASSA card are now left without funds, adding to their distress.
Government Acknowledges a ‘Crisis’
Social Development Minister Sisisi Tolashe recently admitted that Postbank was unprepared for the March grant payments, further describing the situation as a “crisis”. Speaking to MPs on 25 February, she revealed that no clear strategy was in place to manage the Gold Card replacement process efficiently.
“Indeed, there is a crisis. It is a crisis because we identified that there seems to be no plan. If there is a plan, I have yet to see it. Myself and the team can say without fear or contradiction that there is no plan,” she stated.
This lack of preparation has left thousands of grant recipients without access to their funds, despite government reassurances that the transition would be smooth.
What Can Be Done to Resolve This Crisis?
With grant recipients struggling, many are calling for urgent intervention from SASSA and Postbank. Here are some potential solutions:
- Improved Communication: Beneficiaries need clear and transparent updates on how and where to collect their grants.
- Alternative Payment Methods: SASSA should explore mobile banking and e-wallet options to ensure beneficiaries receive their funds on time.
- Extended Support Services: More support staff should be made available at Postbank and SASSA offices to assist those experiencing issues.
- Account Verification: The new black SASSA card system should be thoroughly tested and validated before implementation to prevent failed transactions.
The March SASSA grant payment delays have left many vulnerable South Africans without access to their much-needed social grants. As frustration mounts, government officials and SASSA must act quickly to resolve these issues and ensure that future payments are processed smoothly.
