Why the Upgrade?
The MyCiTi bus system, Cape Town’s premier rapid transit service, initially installs temporary stops along new routes to test and evaluate their feasibility. After thorough public participation and safety assessments, the best locations are then approved for permanent infrastructure.
Councillor Rob Quintas, the Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, confirmed the decision:
“The best locations for the 77 temporary stops have now been confirmed, following a thorough public participation process. As a result, I am pleased to announce that these stops will now be converted to permanent bus stops providing shelter, improved visibility, and more comfort for our passengers. This is part of our motto to do all we can to keep Capetonians moving.”
What to Expect from the New MyCiTi Bus Stops?
The permanent bus stop structures will offer several improvements, ensuring a safer and more accessible environment for commuters. Some of the key features include:
- Wheelchair ramps for improved accessibility
- Leaning rails for passenger comfort while waiting
- Totem poles with lighting to improve visibility at night
- Bus service information for better trip planning
- Shelters with seating at high-traffic stops
These upgrades will significantly enhance the commuting experience, making the MyCiTi system more convenient and accessible for all users.
