Mamelodi Sundowns have officially announced the signing of Bafana Bafana striker Lebo Mothiba, adding significant firepower to their attacking lineup. The 29-year-old forward returns to South Africa after spending over a decade in European football, featuring for clubs such as Lille OSC, Valenciennes, and RC Strasbourg.
A Homecoming for Lebo Mothiba
Mothiba’s journey has now come full circle as he rejoins his boyhood club. He was part of the Sundowns academy from 2007 to 2009 before making the move abroad. His return has been met with great excitement, with the club releasing a statement saying, “He’s flown the South African flag overseas, now Lebo Mothiba is here to add more forward firepower to Bafana Ba Style! Welcome to the home of the Champions, Lebo!”
A Fresh Start After Injury Woes
Mothiba has been recovering from a serious knee injury that sidelined him for an extended period. However, he has been training with Sundowns since January and has gradually worked his way back to fitness. Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso recently expressed optimism about his progress, stating that the striker is in the final stages of recovery and has already integrated well into the squad.
Boosting Mamelodi Sundowns’ Attack
The signing of Mothiba adds depth to Sundowns’ attacking options as they look to maintain their dominance both domestically and on the continent. He will be competing for a place in the forward line alongside Peter Shalulile and Iqraam Rayners, among other stars. With Sundowns fighting for glory in the Betway Premiership, Nedbank Cup, CAF Champions League, and the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup, his experience and physicality could prove vital.
Mothiba’s Excitement to Rejoin Masandawana
In a video released by the club, Mothiba expressed his delight at returning home, saying, “This is my home, and this is where it all began for me. I am so grateful to be here, and I can’t wait to get started. My name is Lebo Mothiba, and I am proud to be yellow.”
A Short-Term Deal for Now
Phakaaathi previously reported that Mothiba has signed a short-term contract with Sundowns. This will give him an opportunity to prove his fitness and ability before potentially securing a longer stay at the club. After spending his entire senior club career in France, where injuries hampered his consistency, Mothiba will be eager to make a strong impression in the PSL.
Aiming for More Silverware
Sundowns are on course for an eighth consecutive league title, and with the addition of Mothiba, they are further strengthening their chances. Fans will be hopeful that he can contribute significantly and help the club in their quest for domestic and continental dominance.
As the season unfolds, all eyes will be on Mothiba to see if he can rediscover his best form and become a key player for Masandawana.
