New WhatsApp update enables voice message transcriptions, but older iPhones and Afrikaans speakers are left behind.
WhatsApp Introduces Voice Message Transcription Feature
WhatsApp has rolled out a game-changing update that allows users to convert voice messages into text. This new feature, first introduced in November 2024, is now available in South Africa, making it easier to follow conversations without playing audio messages.
Users can enable the transcription feature by navigating to Settings > Chats > Voice message transcripts. Once activated, WhatsApp will automatically convert incoming voice notes into text, improving accessibility in noisy environments. The feature operates directly on users’ devices, ensuring privacy as WhatsApp and third parties cannot access the transcriptions.
Who Can Use WhatsApp’s Voice Message Transcription?
The new update supports several major languages, including English. However, Afrikaans speakers will have to wait as the feature does not yet support their language. This limitation might be frustrating for many South African users who prefer communicating in Afrikaans.
Some iPhone Users Will Lose Access to WhatsApp
In addition to the transcription feature, WhatsApp has announced it will discontinue support for older Apple devices. Starting from May 5, 2025, WhatsApp will no longer work on iPhones running iOS 15.1 or earlier. This means that users with the iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus must either update their software (if possible) or upgrade to a newer device.
WhatsApp justifies this decision by citing the need for security updates and support for new features. However, for those using older devices that cannot upgrade beyond iOS 12, this change means purchasing a new smartphone to continue using WhatsApp.
A Useful Update – But Not for Everyone
The voice message transcription feature is a game-changer for users who prefer reading over listening. It also improves accessibility for individuals in noisy environments or those with hearing impairments. However, the lack of Afrikaans support and the end of support for older iPhones may frustrate some users.
