Siyabonga Mabena, who recently turned 18, is one of the brightest young prospects to emerge from Mamelodi Sundowns’ academy in recent years. Last season, under the guidance of then-coach Rulani Mokwena, the teenager was given regular first-team minutes, and he quickly justified the faith shown in him. His performances were filled with flair, confidence, and the kind of skill that excites crowds. As the season progressed, Mabena’s growth was evident, and fans were eager to see him continue his development.
A Rising Star Losing Momentum
Whenever Mabena took possession of the ball, the excitement in the stands was undeniable. His ability to take on defenders with unpredictable dribbling, combined with his youthful energy, made him a joy to watch. His talent was showcased in various highlight reels online, confirming his potential as a future star.
However, rather than continuing his momentum this season, Mabena has seen his game time drastically reduced. Despite the season reaching its latter stages, he has only played twice in the Betway Premiership and made a single appearance in the CAF Champions League. This sharp decline in minutes is a concerning setback for a player of his ability.
A Change in Coaching Philosophy Hindering Development
Mokwena’s trust in Mabena allowed the youngster to thrive, but following the coach’s departure, things have changed. His successor, Manqoba Mngqithi, barely gave him a chance, and current boss Miguel Cardoso has also sidelined the teenager. This raises concerns about whether South African football is regressing to a mindset where young players are overlooked in favour of experienced professionals.
In recent seasons, clubs in the Betway Premiership have shown greater commitment to youth development, with youngsters like Relebohile Mofokeng, Shandre Campbell, and Mohau Nkota receiving regular game time. Even Sundowns, a club known for prioritising expensive signings over promoting from within, seemed to be shifting towards investing in young talent. Unfortunately, Mabena’s current situation suggests otherwise.
What’s Next for Siyabonga Mabena?
If South African football is serious about nurturing young talent, players like Mabena must be given opportunities to play and grow. Without consistent game time, his development could stagnate, undoing the progress he made last season.
If Sundowns continue to overlook him, a loan move or even a permanent transfer to a club willing to invest in his future may be the best course of action. The country cannot afford to see another promising young talent fade into obscurity due to a lack of opportunities.
