Table Mountain Fires: A rapid spread of wildfires across Table Mountain National Park (TMNP) has resulted in multiple area closures and heightened safety alerts. Strong gusting winds overnight have exacerbated the fires, pushing them toward Tafelberg Road and Vredehoek, with firefighters working tirelessly to contain the blazes.
Firefighters Battle Worsening Blazes
The fire initially ignited in Newlands Ravine on Sunday before intensifying on Tuesday. In response, all available resources from the TMNP Fire Management Team, NCC Wildfires, Volunteer Wildfire Services, Working on Fire, Provincial Disaster Management, Enviro Wildfire Services, and the City of Cape Town Fire and Rescue Services have been deployed to manage the crisis.
According to SANParks Senior Communications Manager Charles Phahlane, aerial firefighting teams were set to deploy at first light on Wednesday, prioritizing operations in the City Bowl and Red Hill regions.
Areas Under Alert & Closures
Authorities have enforced multiple closures to ensure public safety, urging residents and visitors to avoid the affected zones.
The following areas will remain closed until further notice:
- Front Table Trails: From Platteklip Gorge to Newlands, including Maclear’s Beacon.
- Tafelberg Road: Closed to the public.
- Kirstenbosch & Rhodes Memorial Estate: Active fire lines remain close to Kirstenbosch; Newlands Forest is closed.
- Red Hill Trails: Access from Red Hill, Slangkop, Ocean View, Jonkersdam, and Kleinplaas Dam is restricted.
Public Safety Advisory
Authorities emphasize that hikers and the public must strictly adhere to trail closures due to ongoing fire operations and fire damage. Unauthorized presence in restricted areas poses risks both to individuals and to firefighting efforts.
Despite the severity of the situation, officials have urged Cape Town residents not to panic, assuring them that emergency teams are actively working to contain the fires.
