Shocking Bribery Incident on N2 Near Makhanda Leads to Arrest
A 41-year-old hearse driver has been arrested for attempting to bribe a traffic officer on the N2 near Makhanda (Grahamstown). The shocking incident unfolded during a routine stop-and-check operation.
Bribery Attempt During Routine Stop
The hearse, transporting a body from Peddie to Gqeberha, was stopped by authorities conducting a random checkpoint. The officer quickly noticed that the vehicle, designed to carry only one passenger alongside the driver, was overloaded with two additional occupants in the front seat.
In a brazen act, the driver allegedly offered the officer money, suggesting she “buy herself a drink,” as bribery has unfortunately become a known practice in such situations. However, instead of turning a blind eye, the officer immediately arrested the suspect for attempting to bribe a law enforcement official.
Passengers Allowed to Continue, Funeral Parlour Owner Called
Upon further investigation, the two extra passengers were identified as hitchhikers. They were allowed to proceed with their journey, while the owner of the funeral parlour was summoned to retrieve the hearse.
Legal Consequences of Bribery in South Africa
Bribing a traffic officer is a serious offence in South Africa, punishable under the Prevention and Combating of Corrupt Activities Act. Convictions can result in hefty fines or imprisonment.
This incident highlights the importance of upholding the law and refusing to partake in corrupt practices. Authorities continue to encourage citizens to report bribery attempts to ensure justice is served.
