The South African automotive market has experienced a notable shift in recent years, with Chinese car manufacturers steadily gaining ground in a space traditionally dominated by European, Japanese, and Korean brands. The latest contender is the GAC Emkoo, a stylish and well-equipped SUV that marks the Guangzhou Automobile Group’s (GAC) ambitious push into the African market. Positioned as a competitor in the family SUV segment, the GAC Emkoo promises to bring fresh design and solid features at a competitive price point, signaling China’s growing influence in South Africa’s automotive landscape.

The timing of GAC’s move into the South African market couldn’t be more opportune. With potential American trade sanctions looming and the possibility of the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) being canceled in 2025, Chinese manufacturers are increasingly eyeing Africa as a critical market. South Africa, in particular, is seen as the gateway to the broader African continent. As global trade dynamics evolve, the GAC Emkoo might just be a precursor to greater Chinese investments in the region.

Design and Features

The exterior of the GAC Emkoo 1.5T GDI Executive Plus is a standout in a competitive market. Featuring clean lines, bold LED lighting, and an intricately designed grille, the Emkoo delivers a modern, sophisticated look that aligns with global automotive trends. Gone are the days when Chinese vehicles were criticized for replicating designs from established Western manufacturers. The Emkoo stands confidently as a well-designed and visually appealing SUV that can easily compete with other models in the same class.

Inside, the GAC Emkoo further impresses with a level of interior quality that defies its price tag. For R559,900, buyers are treated to soft-touch materials, leather upholstery with contrasting stitching, and a panoramic sunroof that fills the cabin with natural light. The overall interior ambiance leans towards the premium, making it an attractive choice for those looking for luxury without the luxury price.

However, there are a few areas where the Emkoo could improve. The infotainment system, while featuring a large 10.1-inch touchscreen, occasionally suffers from glitches, such as unresponsiveness or freezing when switching between screens. This minor flaw detracts from an otherwise well-appointed cabin, but it’s worth noting that touch responses are generally quick, and the overall interface looks polished and modern.

Driving Experience

When it comes to performance, the GAC Emkoo presents a balanced offering. Traditionally, Chinese cars have been criticized for lacking refinement in driving dynamics, but the Emkoo challenges that stereotype. The vehicle’s 1.5-litre turbocharged engine produces 130 kW and 270 Nm of torque, which is standard for the segment. The powertrain, paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, delivers smooth and efficient shifts. However, the Emkoo’s curb weight can make the engine feel a bit sluggish at times, particularly during acceleration. Turbo lag is present at lower RPMs, but once the engine picks up, the performance feels more than adequate for everyday driving.

The chassis engineers have managed to strike a good balance between comfort, control, and grip. The Emkoo handles corners well, with body roll kept in check, while maintaining excellent ride comfort and NVH (noise, vibration, and harshness) characteristics. Though the electrically assisted power steering is less communicative than some competitors, it provides adequate response for most driving situations. The Emkoo delivers a composed, comfortable ride, making it suitable for both city driving and longer road trips.

Verdict

Overall, the GAC Emkoo 1.5T GDI Executive Plus is a compelling contender in South Africa’s competitive family SUV market. Despite a few minor issues, such as the infotainment system’s occasional glitches and some turbo lag, the Emkoo offers great value for money. It combines impressive interior quality, modern features, and a strong design ethos at a price point that competes well against other established brands. The inclusion of advanced driver assistance systems, often only available as expensive options with more established automakers, adds to its appeal.

As Chinese manufacturers continue to push for greater market share in South Africa and the rest of Africa, the GAC Emkoo could be a sign of things to come. With its attractive pricing and steadily improving quality, it may be poised to make a lasting impact in the region.
