Jesse Donn, a former Bafana Bafana footballer, has officially announced his retirement from professional football at the young age of 25. His decision, which took many by surprise, is rooted in his deep religious convictions.
Rise to Prominence in South African Football
Donn started his football journey at Ubuntu Cape Town before securing a move to SuperSport United in 2019. During his time with Matsatsantsa, he made 59 league appearances, netting two goals. His impressive performances earned him a call-up to the national team in 2021 as a replacement for the injured Yusuf Maart, though he never won a senior cap.
Despite being named in a preliminary squad for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, Donn was not included in the final selection. His playing time at SuperSport United dwindled under Gavin Hunt in the 2022-23 season, leading to his eventual departure from the club in mid-2024.
Jesse Donn Decision to Retire
In an interview on Power Sports Extra with Mmaskepe Matsebane, Donn revealed that his decision to step away from football was guided by faith rather than any issues on the field. He made it clear that injuries, team politics, or attitude were not factors in his choice.
“This wasn’t something I expected, but to give some context, it’s a decision rooted in faith, not football,” Donn shared. “It’s simply been a journey that God has been guiding me through, and now it’s a path my wife and I are taking together.”

While stepping away from professional football has been a challenging transition, Donn remains optimistic about the future. He expressed his desire to stay involved in the sport in some capacity, despite hanging up his boots.
“I won’t lie, it hasn’t been easy, and it caught me off guard, but God has been incredibly kind. I’m looking forward to exciting new opportunities ahead,” he added.

A Unique Farewell to the Game
Donn’s decision highlights the impact personal beliefs can have on an athlete’s career. While his departure leaves a gap in South African football, his journey serves as an example of staying true to one’s values.
As he embarks on this new chapter, the football fraternity will surely miss his presence on the pitch, but his legacy will continue in other ways.
