Eskom Announces Scheduled Power Cut for Critical Network Maintenance
Eskom has confirmed a planned electricity outage in Meadowlands, Soweto, as part of its ongoing efforts to maintain and upgrade the power distribution network. The affected areas will experience a 9-hour power cut on Monday, 24 February, from 09:00 to 18:00.
Eskom Maintenance: Areas Affected by the Power Outage
Residents in the following Meadowlands zones will be impacted:
- Zone 2
- Zone 3
- Zone 4
- Zone 5
- Zone 6
Eskom emphasized that the maintenance work is essential to ensure network reliability and prevent unexpected power failures in the future.
Why is the Maintenance Necessary?
Eskom has stated that the scheduled maintenance is crucial for improving power supply performance in Soweto. “We understand the inconvenience this may cause, but this maintenance is essential to improve network performance and prevent unexpected failures,” Eskom noted.
Safety Precautions for Residents
During the outage, Eskom urges all residents to:
✅ Treat all electrical appliances as live even when the power is off.
✅ Unplug sensitive electronics to avoid damage when power is restored.
✅ Prepare alternative power sources if needed for essential devices.
Load Shedding Worsens with Stage 6 Implementation
In addition to the scheduled outage, Eskom has implemented Stage 6 load shedding due to multiple unit failures at key power stations, including Camden, Majuba, and Medupi. The breakdowns have resulted in a loss of 3,864 MW of generation capacity, further straining South Africa’s electricity supply.
The power utility has not yet provided an end date for Stage 6 load shedding, leaving residents uncertain about future disruptions.
Growing Frustration Among Gauteng Residents
With ongoing maintenance outages and intensified load shedding, many Gauteng residents are voicing frustration over the country’s persistent electricity crisis. The question remains—is Eskom doing enough to address the ongoing power challenges?
