The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has confirmed that the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant payments for February 2025 are being processed this week. Beneficiaries can expect their funds soon, according to the latest schedule. If you rely on this grant, here’s everything you need to know about the payment dates, eligibility, and how to check your status.

SASSA SRD Grant February Payment Dates

SASSA has released the official February 2025 payment schedule, ensuring that recipients can plan accordingly. The confirmed payment window is as follows:

  • 22 to 28 February 2025

For those receiving their payments in March, the scheduled dates are:

  • 24 to 29 March 2025

Recipients should note that once the payment has been processed, it can take two to three working days for the funds to reflect in their bank accounts.

How to Check Your SASSA SRD Grant Status

During the payment week, SASSA encourages recipients to verify their grant payment status. Here’s how you can do it:

  1. Online: Visit the SRD website and log in with your credentials to check the exact date your grant will be deposited.
  2. Phone Inquiry: Dial 0800 60 10 11, provide your ID number, and follow the prompts to check your application or payment status.

Eligibility for the SASSA SRD Grant

The SRD grant is meant to assist financially vulnerable individuals. To qualify, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Be a South African citizen, permanent resident, refugee, or special permit holder.
  • Not receive other government financial assistance such as UIF benefits, NSFAS bursaries, or permanent social grants.
  • Be unemployed and not have more than R624 in their bank account.
  • Be between the ages of 18 and 59.

How to Apply for the SRD Grant

If you meet the eligibility criteria, you can apply for the SASSA SRD grant through the following steps:

  1. Visit the SASSA website.
  2. Click the yellow “Click here to apply online” bar under the SRD section.
  3. Enter your mobile number and click “Send SMS”.
  4. Enter the one-time pin (OTP) sent to your phone for verification.
  5. Follow the prompts to complete your application.

SASSA SRD Grant Collection Options

SASSA offers multiple ways for beneficiaries to access their R370 grant payment. These include:

1. Bank Account Transfer

For a faster and more secure transaction, SASSA recommends that recipients receive their funds via a personal bank account. This method ensures direct deposit as soon as the grant is available.

2. Cash Send

Those without a bank account can opt for the Cash Send option, which requires a valid ID number and registered cellphone number to access the payment.

3. Retail Stores

Beneficiaries can also collect their SRD grant payments from participating retail stores, including:

  • Pick n Pay
  • Checkers
  • Shoprite
  • Boxer Stores

Recent Developments: SASSA SRD Grant Court Ruling

The SRD grant has been a vital financial lifeline for over eight million South Africans, asylum seekers, and refugees since its inception in May 2020. In a significant court ruling in January 2025, the High Court in Pretoria found that the government had unfairly excluded millions of eligible recipients. This ruling has intensified discussions around turning the SRD grant into a Basic Income Grant (BIG), a move that the National Treasury has repeatedly resisted due to budget constraints.

Following this court decision, Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana now faces pressure to expand the SRD grant coverage. His 2025 Budget Speech, which was unexpectedly postponed to 12 March 2025, is expected to address potential tax hikes to fund an extended social relief programme.

SASSA Queries and Complaints

If you have any concerns regarding your SASSA SRD grant or payments, you can contact SASSA through the following channels:

  • Toll-Free Call Centre: 0800 60 10 11
  • SASSA Head Office: 012-400-2322
  • Email: grantsenquiries@sassa.gov.za
  • Local Offices: Find the nearest SASSA branch for assistance.

The SASSA SRD Grant remains an essential financial aid programme, with payments for February 2025 currently being processed. Beneficiaries should regularly check their payment status and ensure their details are up to date to avoid delays. With the upcoming Budget Speech, further changes to the SRD grant system may be announced, making it crucial for recipients to stay informed.
