In a move aimed at reversing their dismal season, Marumo Gallants have parted ways with head coach Dan ‘Dance’ Malesela and technical director Molefi Ntseki. The decision comes after a challenging period for the team, which has struggled to make an impact in the Betway Premiership. With just 15 points from 17 matches, Gallants find themselves hovering dangerously near the relegation zone.
Struggles Under Malesela’s Leadership
Under Malesela’s guidance, Gallants have faced significant defensive issues, conceding 30 goals and scoring a mere 14, making them the team with the weakest defence in the league. Despite some bright moments, the club has failed to translate potential into consistent performances, leading to their decision to seek a change.
Marumo Gallants: A Fresh Approach Sought
Marumo Gallants, currently 14th on the league table with only four wins, are looking to change their fortunes. A statement from the club, released on 21 February 2025, expressed appreciation for the contributions of Malesela and Ntseki while confirming the search for a new head coach. In the interim, assistant coaches Sundra Govender and Duncan Lechesa will take charge of the team as the club continues talks with Moroccan coach Abdeslam Ouaddou. Ouaddou has arrived in South Africa to finalise discussions.
A Time for Change
The coaching shake-up comes in response to poor results, including a heavy loss to Mamelodi Sundowns, which saw the team slip into a serious relegation battle. Gallants’ management hopes that the interim duo can stabilise the team while the search for a permanent replacement intensifies.
With their survival in the top flight at risk, the club’s next steps are crucial as they prepare for upcoming fixtures. The hiring of a new coach, such as Ouaddou, could signal a new era for the club and their battle to stay in the Premiership.
