Kaizer Chiefs suffered a humbling 4-1 defeat at the hands of SuperSport United in a Betway Premiership clash at FNB Stadium on Tuesday evening. The heavy loss left Amakhosi head coach Nasreddine Nabi frustrated, as he pointed to a lack of recovery time following their recent Nedbank Cup fixture.
Kaizer Chiefs’ Early Fightback Fizzles Out
SuperSport wasted no time asserting their dominance, taking the lead within the first three minutes through Samir Nurkovic. Chiefs, however, responded well and found an equaliser in the 30th minute courtesy of Makabi Lilepo. The momentum was short-lived, as just two minutes later, Christian Sule restored SuperSport’s lead, shifting the game back in their favour.
The visitors continued to pile on the pressure in the second half, and their advantage was extended in the 63rd minute when Gamphani Lungu made it 3-1. Chiefs’ night went from bad to worse five minutes later when Gaston Sirino was sent off for a second bookable offence. SuperSport sealed their emphatic victory in the 83rd minute as Siphesihle Ndlovu found the back of the net.
Nasreddine Nabi Laments Tight Schedule
Following the match, Nabi admitted that his side struggled physically, citing the tight fixture schedule as a major factor in their underwhelming display. Chiefs had just two days to recover from their 3-0 Nedbank Cup victory over Chippa United on Saturday, while SuperSport had a full week to prepare.
“It was a very difficult game and a painful loss,” Nabi said. “I’m not making excuses, but the reality is that we only had two days to recover. When the body is not responding, everything falls apart like a house of cards.”
Despite the heavy defeat, the Tunisian tactician urged fans not to judge the team solely on this performance, stating that mistakes happen even to the biggest clubs.
Sirino Suspension Adds to Chiefs’ Woes
As if the defeat wasn’t bad enough, Chiefs will now have to navigate their upcoming league fixtures without Sirino, who is set to serve a two-match suspension. The Uruguayan forward, who joined from Mamelodi Sundowns at the start of the season, received his marching orders against SuperSport and will miss the crucial clash against his former club on 1 March.
With Chiefs currently sixth on the log with 25 points from 18 games, the pressure is mounting on Nabi. The next few matches will be critical in determining both his future and the club’s hopes of securing a CAF competition spot.
