The University of the Free State (UFS) has confirmed that academic activities on its Bloemfontein campus are proceeding as usual despite recent disruptions. The university, in continuous engagement with the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS), is working to resolve outstanding matters while ensuring minimal disruption to students’ education.
UFS Classes Resume Following Disruptions
Lacea Loader, Senior Director of Communication and Marketing at the University of the Free State, acknowledged that academic activities were affected on Tuesday morning due to concerns surrounding student registration and funding. However, she reassured students and staff that “classes are continuing as normal.”
The disruptions were primarily driven by dissatisfaction among students regarding financial aid and registration issues. The University of the Free State has stated that it remains committed to addressing these concerns in collaboration with the National Student Financial Aid Scheme while taking into account its financial constraints.
Compromises and Concessions Made by UFS
To facilitate student registration and mitigate concerns, UFS has implemented several concessions:
- Funding has been confirmed and allocated to 25,551 students.
- Out of these, 22,246 students have successfully registered for the academic year.
- On 3 February 2025, allowances were paid to 14,303 registered students.
- An additional 7,943 students who were not registered at the time of the first payment will receive interim allowances on 17 February 2025.
Despite these efforts, dissatisfaction among students persisted, leading to campus disruptions. The university clarified that all financial concessions were communicated to students via official platforms on 27 and 31 January 2025.
UFS Ensures Security and Stability on Campus
While UFS prioritizes resolving financial aid concerns, it has also taken measures to ensure safety on campus. “The university’s protection service is on alert, and the situation on the campuses is being closely monitored, with the necessary security measures in place,” said the university.
Students on campus have confirmed that classes are continuing as scheduled, affirming the university’s efforts to maintain academic stability.

The university remains dedicated to working closely with the funding scheme and relevant stakeholders to address any remaining challenges. As discussions continue, the university encourages students to stay informed through official communication channels.
Despite the initial disruptions, students can now focus on their academic responsibilities, knowing that the university is actively engaged in resolving financial aid concerns while keeping learning uninterrupted.
