Johannesburg and Tshwane residents should brace for more bad weather on Tuesday as the South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a yellow level 2 warning for adverse and disruptive weather conditions. The inclement weather is expected to bring severe thunderstorms, damaging winds, excessive lightning, hail, and heavy rains over most parts of Gauteng.
Bad Weather Warning Issued by SAWS
According to SAWS, the bad weather conditions will persist until Tuesday, with chances of isolated and scattered rain and thundershowers. The City of Tshwane Emergency Services (TEMS) Department has urged residents to take necessary precautions to avoid risks associated with the severe weather.
Tshwane Emergency Services spokesperson, Lindsay Zwelithini Mnguni, has warned that the impact of severe thunderstorms could lead to localized flooding, particularly in low-lying areas, informal settlements, and vulnerable roads. Additionally, potential mudslides, rockfalls, and soil erosion may put residents’ safety at risk. Severe lightning strikes could also result in structural fires, making it crucial for citizens to stay alert.
Traffic Disruptions and Safety Concerns
Mnguni also cautioned that the bad weather may cause significant traffic disruptions due to flooding on major roads.
“Minor to major vehicle accidents may occur due to poor visibility and slippery road conditions,” he said. “Localised service disruptions, power failures, and damage to infrastructure are also possible. Some communities may be temporarily inaccessible due to the extreme conditions.”
Precautionary Measures for Residents
To ensure safety during this period of bad weather, residents are advised to take the following precautions:
- Stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel.
- Avoid metal objects that could attract lightning, such as fishing rods and golf clubs.
- Do not take shelter under isolated trees or tall structures.
- Stay away from fast-flowing rivers and streams to avoid being swept away by sudden floods.
- Refrain from crossing flooded roads, bridges, or swollen streams.
Mnguni assured residents that emergency services are closely monitoring the bad weather and that they remain on high alert for any weather-related emergencies. Authorities continue to urge the public to follow updates from SAWS and adhere to safety guidelines to minimize risks during stormy conditions.
Stay Updated on Bad Weather Alerts
Residents are encouraged to stay informed by following official weather updates and emergency service alerts. If assistance is needed, contact the nearest emergency services immediately.
With bad weather conditions persisting, it is essential for Joburg and Tshwane residents to exercise extreme caution and prioritize safety. Stay indoors, stay informed, and stay safe!
