Today’s Weather Alert
South Africans should brace for severe weather conditions today as the South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued multiple warnings across the country. Thunderstorms, heavy rain, and strong winds are expected in various regions, while some areas are also at risk of fire hazards.
Severe Weather Warnings for 6 February 2025
SAWS has issued Yellow Level 2 warnings for severe thunderstorms with heavy downpours, hail, strong winds, and excessive lightning. These conditions could lead to localized flooding and infrastructure damage in Gauteng, the central and eastern Free State, the eastern North West, and parts of KwaZulu-Natal.
Additionally, disruptive rain is expected over the eastern parts of KwaZulu-Natal, increasing the risk of flash floods. Coastal regions should also prepare for strong winds and high waves, which may create hazardous conditions for maritime navigation.
Fire Danger Warnings
Extremely high fire danger conditions have been forecast for the Northern Cape’s northeastern parts and the western regions of the North West. Dry and windy conditions will make these areas particularly vulnerable to wildfires, posing risks to property and the environment.

Precautionary Measures
With extreme weather expected, residents should take necessary precautions, including:
✅ Avoiding flooded areas – Heavy rain may cause flash floods.
✅ Securing loose objects – Strong winds could cause damage.
✅ Seeking shelter during thunderstorms – Avoid open fields and tall trees.
✅ Staying updated – Monitor official SAWS alerts and local news.
Fire-prone areas should also be on high alert, and any suspicious smoke or flames should be reported to emergency services immediately.
The combination of thunderstorms, heavy rainfall, strong winds, and high fire danger makes today’s weather potentially hazardous for many regions. Residents should stay informed and exercise caution to minimize risks. Keep an eye on SAWS updates and follow safety guidelines to navigate the day safely.
