BMW has unveiled the first mid-life update for its flagship electric SUV, the BMW iX, ahead of its sales debut in March 2025. Although the iX’s global reveal was nearly five years ago, the facelift brings a host of upgrades in both design and performance. From its sleek new look to its more powerful drivetrain options, the facelifted iX offers an even more enticing proposition for those seeking luxury, power, and sustainability in one vehicle.

    BMW iX Subtle Exterior Changes

Despite being one of BMW’s most iconic electric models, the iX’s facelifted exterior has undergone subtle updates. The front and rear aprons have been redesigned, alongside reshaped headlights and the signature LED daytime running lights. While the overall look of the iX remains unchanged, the option of the M Sport package for non-M Performance variants is now available.

The iX’s sealed grille, which has been a point of debate in terms of design, has also received a refresh. It now features a new internal diagonal pattern and offers an Iconic Glow illuminated outer surround as an option. The M70 variant stands out with its black mirror caps, unique grille design, and 22-inch M light alloy wheels. The colour palette has expanded with five new hues, including Space Silver Metallic and Tanzanite Blue Metallic, as well as three exclusive Individual colours for the xDrive 45 and xDrive 60 models.

    Performance Enhancements

Underneath, BMW has made minor adjustments to improve the driving experience. The facelifted iX now features a retuned chassis and suspension, updated wheel bearings and wheels to reduce friction, and adaptive electronically controlled shock absorbers as standard on the M70. Additionally, the M70 variant boasts red M brake calipers, M sport brakes, and Active Steering to enhance both handling and performance.

    Interior Tweaks

Inside, the BMW iX’s layout remains largely unchanged. The 12.3-inch instrument cluster and 14.9-inch iDrive infotainment screen retain their place in the centre console, with the latter now featuring the latest 8.5 operating system, 5G connectivity, and improved voice recognition. New interior options include the M Sport package, which brings M multifunction seats, steering wheel, and pedals. BMW has also introduced several new features such as a 30-speaker Bowers & Wilkins Diamond surround sound system and quad-zone climate control in the M70.

    Powertrain & Range Updates

One of the most significant changes in the facelifted BMW iX is its revised powertrain lineup. The xDrive 45 now replaces the xDrive 40, featuring a new 94.8-kWh battery that powers a pair of electric motors to produce 300 kW, providing an impressive range of 602 km. The xDrive 60, which replaces the xDrive 50, uses a 109.1-kWh battery and develops 400 kW, with a range of 700 km. The range-topping M70 boasts a slightly smaller 108.9-kWh battery but a whopping 485 kW and 1,100 Nm of torque. It accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.8 seconds and reaches a top speed of 250 km/h.

    Charging and Availability

All variants support DC fast charging, with the xDrive 60 and M70 offering a maximum charging rate of 175 kW and 195 kW, respectively. With these charging speeds, the battery can go from 10-80% in approximately 35 minutes. BMW South Africa has confirmed the facelifted iX will be available from the third quarter of 2025, with pricing details to be announced closer to the launch. The current model range begins at R1 735 000 for the xDrive 40, rising to R2 975 000 for the M60.
