The long-awaited Toyota Fortuner GR-Sport (GR-S) is finally set to make its debut in March. Toyota South Africa Motors (TSAM) had previously announced the addition of this high-performance model to its popular SUV lineup, but only recently confirmed its impressive power outputs and other standout features.
Boosted Performance and Suspension Upgrades
The Fortuner GR-S will share its powerhouse GD-6 2.8-litre turbo diesel engine with the Hilux GR Sport III. This engine delivers an impressive 165kW of power and 550Nm of torque, a notable 10% improvement from the standard model’s 150kW and 500Nm outputs. Power will be distributed to all four wheels through a recalibrated six-speed automatic transmission, ensuring a smoother yet more dynamic driving experience.
Like its Hilux counterpart, the Fortuner GR-S will feature mono-tube shock absorbers and GR-tuned off-road suspension, elevating its handling capabilities on and off the road.
Sporty Exterior and GR Branding
The Fortuner GR-S flaunts a bold and aggressive design. It rides on 18-inch GR alloy wheels and boasts GR-branded front and rear bumpers, a black honeycomb grille, black side-steps, roof rails, and mirror caps. Additional elements such as a honeycomb lower air intake and darkened LED headlight clusters enhance its sporty appeal.
Luxurious Interior with GR Touches
Inside, the GR-S continues its sporty theme with branded Alcantara sport seats, alloy pedals, and likely a leather-wrapped GR steering wheel, red stitching, and GR accents throughout the cabin. These enhancements aim to provide both comfort and a racing-inspired aesthetic.
Toyota’s Confidence in the GR-S
Leon Theron, Senior Vice-President of Sales and Marketing at TSAM, expressed confidence in the new model’s potential. “It will have more power and torque and also better suspension,” he stated, adding that he anticipates strong demand for the Fortuner GR-S.
Pricing and Availability
While official pricing and specifications remain under wraps, the Fortuner GR-S is expected to be priced just below the Hilux GR-S, which retails at R999,000. For context, the current most expensive Fortuner model, the 48V VX with mild-hybrid technology, is priced at R961,800.
A Long-Awaited Arrival
The Fortuner GR-S has been available in international markets like Thailand and Indonesia for several years, making its launch in South Africa highly anticipated. With the current-generation Fortuner dating back to 2015 and a new model expected in 2027, the GR-S offers an exciting upgrade to the lineup.
