Donell Mbele Appears in Court on Rape Charges
Donell Mbele, the 23-year-old son of renowned South African actress and producer Sonia Mbele, appeared in the Randburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday, facing two counts of rape. The charges relate to alleged incidents that occurred on December 14 and 15, 2024, at his residence in Morningside.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), the complainant, a 17-year-old girl, stated that after spending an evening with Donell at Clearwater Mall, they went to his home under the pretence of charging his phone. It was there that the alleged assaults took place.
Social Media Response Amid Legal Troubles
Ahead of his court appearance, Donell shared a cryptic post on his Instagram Stories, quoting a Bible verse from Isaiah 54:17:
“No weapon forged against you will prevail, and you will refute every tongue that accuses you, declares the Lord.”
The message sparked mixed reactions online, with some condemning the post as insensitive and others offering their support.
Previous Assault Case Resurfaces
This isn’t Donell’s first brush with the law. In 2022, he was accused of physical abuse by his then-girlfriend. The matter was later struck off the Randburg Magistrate’s Court roll after the complainant failed to attend court proceedings.
Following the 2022 allegations, Sonia Mbele publicly addressed the situation, saying:
“Donell will face his demons and take accountability for his actions, and let the law take its course.”
Her statement highlighted her resolve to remain impartial while emphasizing the importance of justice.
Bail Granted and Case Postponement
During Monday’s proceedings, Donell was granted bail set at R1,000. The court has postponed the case to February 10, 2025, for further investigation.
The postponement is expected to allow more time for evidence gathering and witness statements.
A Family in the Spotlight
The charges against Donell have once again placed the Mbele family under intense public scrutiny. Sonia Mbele, known for her work on the popular South African series Generations, has yet to release a statement regarding the latest allegations against her son.
