Defying the Odds
Malwandla Baloyi, a student from New Hope School in Pretoria for learners with physical and learning disabilities, was born with brittle bone disease and scoliosis. These conditions made her matric year particularly grueling. Winters brought excruciating pain, and her back problems often left her wheelchair-bound.
“I have brittle bone disease, and during winter, my bones become very painful. I also have scoliosis, and my back hurts a lot,” Baloyi shared.
Her health challenges meant frequent absences from school, missed tests, and lost curriculum time. Reflecting on her journey, Baloyi admitted, “It is even more shocking that I am here among the top achievers nationally because of how often I was absent due to my conditions.”
Despite these setbacks, she demonstrated exceptional grit, turning every challenge into an opportunity to push harder and achieve her goals.
A Vision for the Future
Malwandla Baloyi’s journey to academic success is only the beginning. Her personal experiences have fueled her passion for helping others overcome challenges. She plans to study psychology and has already been accepted by prestigious institutions, including Stellenbosch University, the University of Pretoria, and Wits University.
“My goal is to help people like myself overcome challenges, just as I have been able to do,” Baloyi said. Her aspirations align with her determination to make a meaningful impact in the lives of others, proving that her challenges have only made her stronger and more empathetic.
Class of 2024: A Testament to Resilience
Speaking at a celebratory breakfast hosted by Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube at the MTN Innovation Centre in Johannesburg, the minister lauded the Class of 2024 as “a league of its own.” She praised the students’ resilience, comparing them to the protea flower, a symbol of strength and endurance.
Gwarube noted that the pandemic had significantly disrupted their education journey, starting from Grade 8 in 2020.
“Many of you began your high school journey in 2020 when Covid-19 forced schools to close in March. Traditional learning methods were disrupted. Some of you had to adapt to online learning and deal with limited resources,” Gwarube explained.
Despite these challenges, the matriculants showed exceptional perseverance and adaptability. Gwarube emphasized that their ability to overcome obstacles has paved the way for their future success.
