Outrage Over R100 ‘Leaked’ 2024 Matric Results

The matric Class of 2024, eagerly awaiting the official release of their results, has been rocked by allegations of a controversial leak. A Johannesburg-based company, Edumarks, has come under fire for allegedly offering National Senior Certificate (NSC) results for a mere R100. This development has raised serious concerns about the integrity of the matric exams and the security of sensitive student data.

    Matric Results for Sale

Edumarks, operating since 2022, claims to provide students with their full matric results, including subject percentages, before the official release. The company promises results via email and offers a 100% money-back guarantee if the information cannot be retrieved. On its website, Edumarks markets itself as a solution to the stress of waiting for results, stating:

“For a small one-time fee, you can quickly access your results online with Edumarks, saving you from the anxiety of waiting.”

However, the authenticity of the results provided remains questionable. When contacted, Edumarks’ listed phone number went unanswered, and inquiries sent via WhatsApp received only automated responses.

Public Outcry and Calls for Accountability

The alleged matric results leak has sparked widespread outrage. Crime activist Yusuf Abramjee voiced his concerns on social media, questioning how the results were leaked and who stands to profit from this apparent breach of confidentiality. Abramjee emphasized that the Department of Basic Education (DBE) must respond decisively and hold those responsible accountable if any policies or laws were violated.

In a similar vein, education activist Hendrick Makaneta called for transparency from both Edumarks and the DBE.

“This raises serious questions about how Edumarks gained access to such sensitive information, whether the results being sold are authentic, and whether the DBE’s systems have been compromised,” Makaneta said.

    Concerns About Data Security

The Right2Know Campaign’s Freddy Mathekga highlighted the troubling implications of this alleged leak, particularly regarding personal data security.

“If the information of a learner can be sold for R100, how much more is our bank account?” he questioned.

Mathekga added that this incident underscores the need for improved digital security measures and raises questions about the broader implications of transitioning to online systems for disseminating results.

    Impact on Students

Many matriculants, already anxious about their results, have reportedly purchased their grades through Edumarks. While some claim to have received their results and expressed relief, others report feeling duped, as their results remain “pending” despite payment.

    One student shared their frustration:

“I paid the money and it shows ‘pending’. I am hoping for a refund from Edumarks. I guess I’ll have to wait until Tuesday for my results.”

Another learner who received their results expressed mixed emotions, noting that while they felt relieved to know they had passed, the situation left them questioning the legitimacy of the service.

    Implications for the Education System

The alleged sale of matric results undermines public confidence in South Africa’s education system. It casts doubt on the DBE’s ability to safeguard the integrity of examinations and protect students’ personal information. If these leaks are proven true, it will highlight significant vulnerabilities in the department’s systems.

    Investigations and the Way Forward

Both Edumarks and the DBE are under intense scrutiny. Makaneta urged the DBE to act swiftly:

“Urgent steps must be taken to protect the integrity of the examination process and hold those responsible to account.”

The DBE is expected to address the issue promptly, as the credibility of South Africa’s education system hangs in the balance. Minister of Basic Education Siviwe Gwarube has promised a formal response, which will hopefully provide clarity on whether the alleged leaks are authentic and what measures will be implemented to prevent future breaches.

The alleged R100 matric results leak has brought to light significant issues regarding data security, systemic integrity, and public trust in the education sector. While investigations are underway, this controversy serves as a stark reminder of the need for stringent measures to protect sensitive information and ensure fair practices in the dissemination of academic results.

As the nation awaits the DBE’s official statement, the matric Class of 2024 and their families continue to grapple with the anxiety and uncertainty caused by this alarming development.
