Emergency Services Respond to Structural Collapse in Lenasia: Investigation Underway

On Tuesday evening, a building collapsed at the corner of Guinea Fowl Street and Smew Avenue in Lenasia, south of Johannesburg. The incident left one person injured, with Johannesburg Emergency Services (EMS) conducting a swift rescue operation.

The structural collapse occurred around 7:44 PM, prompting an immediate response from EMS. According to spokesperson Nana Radebe, rescue technicians successfully removed the injured individual from the rubble and transported them to a nearby medical facility.

    Investigation Underway

Emergency personnel have confirmed that only one person was inside the building at the time of the collapse. This determination was made following interviews with eyewitnesses. The cause of the structural failure remains under investigation.

“The City of Joburg Emergency Management Services received a call about a structural collapse in Lenasia. Rescue technicians managed to remove one patient from the rubble. Investigations into the cause of the collapse are ongoing,” said Radebe.

    Traffic Disruption and Public Advisory

The affected area was closed off to traffic to facilitate rescue and investigation efforts. Residents and motorists have been urged to avoid the site and use alternative routes to minimize disruptions.

Past Building Collapse Incidents in South Africa

Building collapses are not uncommon in South Africa, with recent incidents highlighting the risks posed by structural failures.

    • George, Western Cape (May 2023): A tragic collapse during construction claimed 13 lives, leaving several workers unaccounted for. At the time, 81 people were present on-site.
    • Ngcobo, Eastern Cape (May 2023): A shop wall collapse killed five people, prompting condolences from local officials.

These incidents emphasize the critical importance of adherence to safety standards during construction to prevent future tragedies.

While no fatalities were reported in the Lenasia building collapse, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers posed by structural failures. Authorities are actively investigating the cause to ensure accountability and prevent recurrence.
