Joburg EMS Urges Responsible Firework Use

As the clock ticks closer to 2025, excitement builds for New Year’s Eve celebrations across South Africa. However, the City of Johannesburg Emergency Services (EMS) has issued a crucial reminder to residents: fireworks can be fun but require responsible handling to ensure everyone’s safety. With EMS teams on high alert, following the guidelines to avoid accidents and enjoy the festivities responsibly is essential.

Fireworks Safety Guidelines

Joburg EMS spokesperson Xolile Khumalo has emphasized the importance of adhering to the city’s bylaws regarding fireworks. These regulations are designed to minimize risks and ensure a safe and joyous celebration. Here’s what you need to know:

  1. Supervision Is Key
    • Children under the age of 16 are prohibited from handling fireworks without adult supervision. Parents must remain vigilant to prevent injuries.
  2. Authorized Dealers Only
    • Ensure you purchase fireworks from authorized dealers to guarantee they meet safety standards. Unregulated fireworks may pose additional dangers.
  3. Know the Permitted Hours
    • Fireworks are only allowed to be set off between 11 PM and 1 AM on New Year’s Eve. Igniting fireworks outside these hours may lead to penalties.
  4. Mind Your Surroundings
    • Fireworks should never be set off near schools, hospitals, factories storing explosives, or agricultural areas.
    • Avoid using fireworks indoors or near pets, whose sensitive hearing can be severely impacted by the noise.

Protecting Pets During Firework Celebrations

While humans revel in the dazzling displays, fireworks can be a source of distress for animals. Khumalo advises residents to take proactive steps to safeguard pets:

  • Keep Pets Indoors: Create a quiet, secure space where pets can feel safe.
  • Use White Noise: Turn on the TV or play calming music to mask the sound of fireworks.
  • Comfort Items: Provide blankets or toys that help soothe anxious pets.

Legal Implications and Fines

The city has made it clear that violating fireworks regulations will not be taken lightly. Residents found setting off fireworks illegally may face hefty fines. For instance:

  • Fines of up to R1,000 can be issued for disturbing the peace.
  • Dealers selling unauthorized fireworks may also face legal repercussions.

The City of Ekurhuleni has echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing strict enforcement of bylaws during the festive season.

EMS Preparedness for Emergencies

EMS teams will be on high alert across Johannesburg’s seven regions, ready to respond to emergencies swiftly. Residents are urged to report incidents immediately to ensure prompt assistance.

Why Firework Safety Matters

Fireworks, though beautiful, can pose significant risks if misused. Common accidents include burns, eye injuries, and property damage. By following the city’s regulations and practicing caution, residents can reduce these risks and ensure a safe start to the new year.

As we bid farewell to 2024 and welcome 2025, let’s make safety a priority. Whether you’re hosting a gathering or attending a public celebration, remember to handle fireworks with care, respect the bylaws, and consider the well-being of others, including pets.

Here’s to a safe and spectacular New Year’s Eve!
