Eastern Cape Roads Witness Devastating Festive Season Accident
In a heartbreaking incident on Saturday night, December 21, 2024, a tragic head-on N2 collision near Dutywa in the Eastern Cape claimed 12 lives and left two others injured. The accident, which occurred around 8 pm near the Nywarha location, underscores the perils of increased road activity during the festive season.
Details of the Accident
The collision involved a Toyota Quantum minibus with 10 passengers and a Ford Ranger carrying four occupants. According to Unathi Binqose, spokesperson for the provincial transport department, eight passengers in the minibus—four men and four women—lost their lives on the scene, with two others rushed to the hospital. Sadly, one of the injured women later succumbed to her injuries.

In the Ford Ranger, three male passengers died instantly, while a female passenger sustained serious injuries and remains under medical care.

Authorities have launched a culpable homicide investigation as they work to determine the cause of the crash. The tragedy has once again raised concerns about road safety, particularly during the busy holiday period.

Earlier on Saturday, 10 other individuals lost their lives in three separate accidents across the province, further highlighting the dangers of holiday traffic. Fully loaded taxis and increased road activity have been cited as major contributors to the spike in incidents.
