AmaZulu Football Club has made a significant statement of intent by securing experienced midfielder Bongani Zungu and defender Sandile Mthethwa. The two players join Usuthu on permanent deals as free agents, bolstering the squad ahead of the second round of the Betway Premiership campaign.
The signings were announced during the AmaZulu Fan Experience on Tuesday afternoon, where club President Sandile Zungu personally welcomed the duo.
Bongani Zungu: Bringing Winning Experience
The signing of 32-year-old Bongani Zungu is a massive boost for AmaZulu. Known for his commanding presence in midfield, Zungu brings a wealth of experience, having played for Mamelodi Sundowns and various clubs abroad.
Speaking to the club’s website, Zungu expressed his excitement about joining AmaZulu and his determination to help the team succeed.
“My personal goal is to help the team climb as high as possible on the log table, assist the younger players, and bring my experience to the squad,” he said.
Zungu emphasised his ambition to bring silverware to the club, saying, “Everywhere I’ve played, I’ve managed to win trophies, and I want to bring that same winning mentality here. I know what it takes to win, and that’s my aim.”
The Duduza-born midfielder, who was previously linked with Kaizer Chiefs and a potential reunion with Rulani Mokwena at Wydad Casablanca, is excited about working under co-coaches Arthur Zwane and Vusumuzi Vilakazi.
“I’ve watched AmaZulu’s games, and the team plays the modern game. My understanding of the game will help the team, but I know I have to work hard to earn my place,” Zungu added.
Sandile Mthethwa: Adding Defensive Steel
Sandile Mthethwa, a 27-year-old defender from Empangeni, also joins AmaZulu after leaving Orlando Pirates. His pride in signing for a club close to his roots was evident in his comments.
“This club is close to my heart—it’s just two hours away from my hometown. I feel at home already,” Mthethwa said.
Determined to make an impact, he added, “I will do everything within my power to make my mark in the history of AmaZulu, lift my family name, and help the club return to the top four.”

Aiming for Glory
AmaZulu’s dual signings underline the club’s ambition to challenge for honours and solidify their position in the top half of the league. With Zungu’s experience and Mthethwa’s defensive versatility, Usuthu looks poised to compete with the league’s heavyweights.
These acquisitions are sure to excite AmaZulu fans, with Zungu’s winning pedigree and leadership expected to inspire the team on and off the pitch.
