Longwe Twala Avoids Legal Trouble

Longwe Twala, the son of renowned South African music legend Chicco Twala, has narrowly escaped further legal troubles after a magistrate accepted his explanation for a recent court no-show. The 39-year-old, who was arrested earlier this year for a theft incident involving his father’s property, faced additional charges after missing a scheduled court appearance. However, after presenting a reasonable excuse, Twala was let off with a stern warning.

The Legal Drama: Theft and Contempt of Court

Longwe’s legal troubles began earlier in 2024, when he was arrested for breaking into his father’s Fourways home and stealing items valued at R200,000. Chicco Twala accused his son and his younger brother, Sello, of colluding to steal equipment from his music studio while he was away on a business trip in the United States. Longwe reportedly scaled high walls to break into the house, a move that led to his arrest and subsequent release on warning.

In September, Longwe Twala was granted bail, with conditions that included a prohibition from leaving the country and staying free from drugs and alcohol. However, in October, Longwe failed to show up for a scheduled court appearance, which resulted in a warrant for his arrest. His explanation for missing the court date was that he had fallen ill and had asked a family member to notify his legal team. Unfortunately, this communication did not reach his attorneys, leading to the legal proceedings against him.

Magistrate’s Decision: Reasonable Excuse

At his recent appearance at the Randburg Magistrates Court on December 9, 2024, Longwe faced charges of contempt of court for his failure to appear in October. His defense team explained that a family member had failed to inform his lawyers of his illness. After hearing the explanation, Magistrate Abdul Khan found the excuse to be “reasonable.” While the magistrate accepted the explanation, he emphasized that any future absences would lead to more severe consequences, including possible imprisonment. Longwe was released with a warning, but told that he would not be so fortunate next time.

Magistrate Khan stated, “Whether the aunt called or not, I do not know. There is no evidence to the effect. I cannot find that the accused broke any bail conditions. For that reason, the court accepts his explanation and his warning is extended.”

Longwe’s Previous Legal Issues and Family Struggles

This latest court appearance is just one chapter in a long-running saga involving Longwe Twala’s legal and personal troubles. Chicco Twala has previously expressed his concerns about his son’s behavior, particularly his struggles with drug addiction, which have reportedly fueled his criminal behavior. Longwe’s arrest for theft was not the first time he faced the legal system; he was previously arrested in 2020 for allegedly stealing a cellphone from his father.

Chicco Twala has been vocal about his disappointment and frustration with his son’s behavior. In a public interview, the veteran music producer stated that he had exhausted all efforts to help Longwe overcome his addiction, even sending him to rehab more than 30 times. Chicco also expressed that he believed the best place for Longwe might be prison, as he thought it could serve as a wake-up call for his son.

Recent Allegations: Stealing His Sister’s Phone

Adding to Longwe’s legal troubles, it was recently reported that he may have stolen a phone from his sister while staying with her under the conditions of his bail. This new theft allegation has led to further concerns about his behavior, with his sister reportedly planning to open a case against him.

Chicco Twala’s frustration with his son’s repeated legal issues is evident. In a media statement after the first arrest, Chicco said, “I had to lay a case. As a parent, I can’t just watch my son going astray, stealing, especially from the family.”

The Road Ahead: Trial and Potential Imprisonment

Longwe Twala’s case is set to continue in early 2025. The theft charges and contempt of court matter are now postponed to February 5, 2025, for trial. Magistrate Khan has made it clear that any future violations of Longwe’s bail conditions would result in immediate custody. Longwe’s future, both legally and personally, remains uncertain, as his ongoing struggles with addiction and legal issues continue to overshadow his relationship with his father.

The drama surrounding Longwe Twala serves as a stark reminder of the impact that addiction can have on families, especially when it leads to criminal behavior. Despite the ongoing tensions, Chicco Twala has continued to express a desire for his son’s rehabilitation, though he remains unsure whether Longwe will ever turn his life around.

As the case progresses, it will be important to see whether Longwe can avoid further legal trouble and begin the difficult journey toward recovery and accountability
