Deputy President Paul Mashatile’s Office Addresses Controversial Gift Amid Allegations Against Louis Liebenberg

    Deputy President Paul Mashatile’s office is set to return a “precious stone” gifted to his wife, Humile Mashatile, by Louis Liebenberg, who is currently facing serious allegations, including fraud and racketeering.

    Gift Under Scrutiny

    The acting spokesperson for Mashatile, Keith Khoza, clarified that the stone was an unsolicited gift. Professionals had been engaged to verify its authenticity and value for parliamentary declaration. However, in light of the allegations surrounding Liebenberg, the Head of the Deputy President’s Office, Mduduzi Mbada, decided that the gift would be returned.

    “The Deputy President and Mrs. Mashatile are fully briefed and have agreed to the decision,” Khoza stated.

    Arrangements to return the gift are underway, signalling the Mashatile family’s effort to maintain transparency and avoid any association with the controversies tied to Liebenberg.

    Who Is Louis Liebenberg?

    Louis Liebenberg, his wife Dezzi, and seven others are facing 42 charges, including fraud, theft, racketeering, and money laundering. They are accused of running a Ponzi scheme involving unpolished diamonds.

    Despite vehemently denying the allegations, Liebenberg’s troubles have intensified. During a recent court appearance, he revealed undisclosed details about international travels and personal challenges caused by the media attention surrounding the case.

    Legal Developments

    The case against Liebenberg has been postponed to 4 February 2025 for further investigations. Liebenberg remains in custody after abandoning his bail application, citing illness.

    The Mashatile family’s decision to return the gift comes amidst these developments, emphasizing a commitment to ethical conduct and public accountability.
