African champions Banyana Banyana now know their group-stage opponents for the 2024 CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), following the official draw held in Sale, Morocco. The Sasol-sponsored South African team has been placed in Group C, alongside Ghana, Mali, and Tanzania.

The tournament, postponed to 5-26 July 2025 to avoid clashing with the Paris Olympics, will also return to Morocco, where Dr. Desiree Ellis led Banyana to their historic first WAFCON title in 2022. The team will aim to repeat that glory in the same country.

    Coach’s Perspective

Reflecting on the draw, Coach Desiree Ellis emphasized the challenge ahead, stating:

“It is not going to be easy; past results mean nothing. Now that we know who our opponents are, we can start preparing and getting ready for WAFCON as African champions.”

South Africa faces formidable competition in Group C. Ghana, the second-highest ranked team in the group, boasts a rich WAFCON history with three silver medals. Mali brings experience, while Tanzania makes only their second-ever appearance after debuting in 2010.

    Preparations Underway

Banyana Banyana will assemble in Johannesburg on Monday, 25 November 2024, as preparations intensify. Dr. Ellis has already announced the squad to face Jamaica’s Reggae Girlz in two away international friendlies on 29 November and 2 December in Montego Bay. These matches will provide a platform to test strategies and strengthen the team ahead of the tournament.

    The Road Ahead

The African champions are determined to solidify their legacy, carrying the confidence of their 2022 triumph. As the highest-ranked team in Group C (50th globally), they will start as favorites, but the focus will remain on preparation and execution.
