SA Weather Alert: Hot and Humid Weather Ahead and Thunderstorm Warning Issued for Some Parts of The Country
SHARE

As South Africa moves into warmer weather, the SA Weather Service has warned about upcoming weather conditions, including high temperatures and severe thunderstorms for certain regions.

Hot and Humid Weather Forecast

On Friday, 22 November, South Africa will experience hot and humid conditions, with showers and thundershowers expected in several areas. High temperatures will dominate, particularly in the northern regions of Gauteng, Mpumalanga, and Limpopo. The heat is expected to be particularly intense in parts of the Northern Cape and western areas of the country, leading to an increased fire risk.

Severe Thunderstorm Warning for KwaZulu-Natal

A yellow level 2 warning has been issued for severe thunderstorms in the western and central parts of KwaZulu-Natal. These storms are expected to bring damaging winds, heavy rain, hail, and intense lightning. The weather service cautions that these storms could lead to localized damage, affecting infrastructure, vehicles, properties, and livestock. Residents in the warned areas are advised to stay alert for potential hazards and to secure any loose outdoor items that could be affected by high winds.

Provincial Weather Breakdown

Here’s a quick overview of what to expect in some key regions:

1. Gauteng: Partly cloudy conditions with warm temperatures and isolated thundershowers, especially in the extreme north. The UVB index is predicted to be high, so take sun protection measures if outdoors.

2. Mpumalanga: Warm conditions will prevail, with isolated showers and thundershowers expected, excluding the hotter Lowveld areas.

3. Limpopo: A mix of fine and partly cloudy weather with isolated showers and thundershowers, particularly in southern areas. Northern regions are expected to remain dry.

4. Northern Cape: While the coastal areas will remain cool, the interior will experience hot temperatures, raising fire danger concerns. Light showers are possible in some areas.

5. Western Cape: The morning will start with cloudy conditions along the coast, with light rain moving in from the evening. The region’s UVB sunburn index is at an extreme level, urging caution for those spending time outdoors.

6. KwaZulu-Natal: Warm to hot conditions will give way to partly cloudy skies in the afternoon, accompanied by isolated thundershowers. Coastal winds are set to shift from easterly to north-easterly, potentially becoming stronger as the day progresses.

High Fire Danger in Northern Cape and Limpopo

Extreme fire danger conditions are anticipated in the central Northern Cape and northern bushveld of Limpopo due to the very high temperatures and dry conditions. Residents in these areas should avoid open flames and take precautions to prevent accidental fires.

Preparing for Severe Weather

The SA Weather Service advises residents in areas with severe thunderstorm warnings to:

  • Avoid being outdoors during thunderstorms, particularly in exposed areas.
  • Secure outdoor furniture, vehicles, and equipment to prevent damage from high winds.
  • Be vigilant for flash flooding and avoid driving on waterlogged roads.
  • Have an emergency kit ready, including essentials like water, a flashlight, and a first aid kit.

The Impact of Weather Patterns

The transition to summer brings a mixture of challenges, from high temperatures that increase fire risks to thunderstorms that could cause flooding and infrastructure damage. South Africans should stay updated on regional forecasts and take necessary precautions. While the sunny weather invites outdoor activities, safety should remain a priority, particularly with the UVB index reaching high levels in several areas.

By keeping informed and prepared, South Africans can enjoy the summer season while minimizing potential risks from severe weather conditions. Stay tuned for further updates and alerts from the SA Weather Service to stay safe and protected.

Hot and humid weather is on the horizon, bringing the promise of afternoon thundershowers in various parts of the country. Those living in areas with severe thunderstorm warnings should be on high alert and take necessary precautions. Whether it’s avoiding outdoor activities during peak heat or preparing for sudden storms, being ready can make all the difference.

Stay informed, stay safe, and enjoy the warmer season with proper planning and precautions!
