Mitsubishi Motors South Africa has finally revealed the pricing and specifications of the all-new Triton, a much-anticipated addition to the competitive bakkie market. Initially unveiled in Thailand last year, the sixth-generation Triton faced delays but is now ready to take on popular rivals such as the Ford Ranger, Toyota Hilux, and Isuzu D-Max.

A Versatile Model Lineup

Showcased earlier this year at the Nampo Agricultural Expo, the new Triton introduces an extensive lineup of 11 models to the South African market. It is powered by the upgraded 4N16 2.4-litre DI-D turbodiesel engine, offering a choice between two power outputs—81 kW/200 Nm and 135 kW/430 Nm—ensuring it caters to a variety of needs, from practical workhorse to capable family vehicle.

The range includes both Single Cab and Double Cab configurations, though the ClubCab option remains absent. With a starting price of R479,990 for the Single Cab GL, the Triton promises to be a strong value proposition in the segment.

Built Tough for South African Conditions

Internally known as the LC, the new Triton is built on an enhanced platform featuring 65% more tensile materials than its predecessor. This increase improves structural integrity and durability, making it well-suited for the rugged demands of South African roads.

Mitsubishi has also introduced significant suspension upgrades. At the front, the longer double wishbone setup is complemented by increased rear leaf springs and new shock absorbers. Wider tracks, a larger rear stabilizer bar, and recalibrated electric power steering ensure better handling and ride comfort.

Practical and Rugged Dimensions

The Triton’s dimensions reflect its practicality, with a length of 5,320 mm, a height of 1,795 mm, a width of 1,865 mm, and a wheelbase of 3,130 mm. Ground clearance ranges from 200 mm for the Single Cab to 226 mm for the higher-end 4×4 Double Cab models, ensuring confidence on uneven terrain. Additionally, all models boast an impressive towing capacity of 3,500 kg, making the Triton an ideal choice for both work and recreational use.

Advanced 4×4 Technology

Mitsubishi has retained the Triton’s Dakar-inspired SuperSelect-II 4×4 system, which offers versatile driving modes: Eco, Normal, Gravel, Snow, Mud, and Rock. These modes optimize traction and stability in challenging conditions and are accessible in 4HLc and 4LLc settings.

Higher trims, such as the GLS and above, also feature the new Super Active Yaw Control system, enhancing stability during off-road driving. This feature, combined with a 30.4-degree approach angle, a 22.8-degree departure angle, and a 23.6-degree breakover angle, makes the Triton a formidable off-road contender.

Trim Levels and Features

Mitsubishi offers a variety of trims to suit different needs, from the work-focused GL to the off-road-ready Xtreme.

Trim LevelKey Features
GLBasic essentials like 16-inch steel wheels, dual front airbags, Hill Start Assist, and manual windows.
GLSPremium features such as 18-inch alloy wheels, dual-zone climate control, leather seats, LED lighting, and advanced safety.
AthleteSporty design with blacked-out trim, all-terrain tires, rubberized load bin, and unique Athlete badges.
Edition 46Celebratory touches like a canopy, removable kitchen set, roof rack, and Edition 46 badges.
XtremeRugged enhancements, increased ground clearance, chunkier wheel arches, and protective elements for off-road adventures.

Interior and Technology

The Triton’s cabin is a significant upgrade from its predecessor, offering a modern design and improved materials. Key features include an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a six-speaker audio system, and dual-zone climate control on higher trims. Convenience is further enhanced with push-button start, reverse cameras, and front and rear parking sensors.

Pricing and Warranty

Mitsubishi has positioned the Triton competitively, with prices ranging from R479,990 for the Single Cab GL to R889,990 for the top-tier Edition 46. The bakkie is available in six exterior colors, including White Diamond, Impulse Blue Metallic, and Yamabuki Orange Metallic.

Each model comes with a five-year/unlimited-kilometer warranty and a five-year/90,000-kilometer service plan, ensuring peace of mind for owners.

Its blend of practicality, off-road capabilities, and modern features ensures it stands as a worthy challenger to the Ford Ranger, Toyota Hilux, and Isuzu D-Max.
