The road to the 2025 TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) has officially concluded, and the final roster of 24 nations is set. The AFCON 2025 qualification journey, marked by surprises, comebacks, and consistent dominance, ended with Mozambique clinching the last spot after a 2-1 victory over Guinea-Bissau. With the full line-up confirmed, all eyes turn to Morocco, where the tournament will take place in December next year.

The host nation, Morocco, automatically qualifies, promising an electric atmosphere as fans cheer their home team on familiar turf. Featuring a blend of seasoned champions and emerging teams, the 2025 AFCON promises to be a captivating showcase of African football’s growth and diversity.

Former Champions Lead the Charge

Some of Africa’s most decorated footballing nations will once again compete for continental supremacy. Defending champions Côte d’Ivoire headline a roster of previous winners that includes Senegal, Algeria, and Egypt.

Senegal, the 2021 champions, bring their golden generation, spearheaded by global stars such as Sadio Mané. Algeria, who lifted the title in 2019, and Egypt, a seven-time champion, also demonstrated their pedigree with commanding performances during the qualifiers. Côte d’Ivoire, the reigning champions, will aim to defend their crown with a squad that blends youth and experience.

Iconic Teams Return

The continent’s iconic teams—Nigeria, South Africa, and Tunisia—also secured their places. Nigeria, a three-time winner, boasts an attacking prowess that makes them perennial contenders. South Africa, with its passionate fan base, aims to relive the glory of their 1996 triumph. Tunisia, the 2004 champions, bring their tactical discipline and consistency.

These teams represent the traditional powerhouses of African football, ensuring that the competition will feature high-quality matches and moments of brilliance.

Rising Teams and Historic Comebacks

The qualifiers highlighted the evolution of African football, with several nations making significant returns to the tournament. DR Congo, Angola, and Gabon reasserted their presence, reminding fans of their footballing heritage.

Botswana, in particular, made headlines by ending a 12-year absence from the competition. Their qualification underscores the growing competitiveness among African nations, as teams previously regarded as underdogs rise to challenge the established order. Tanzania and Mozambique also fought hard to book their places, further reflecting the parity that now defines the sport on the continent.

Spirited Underdogs and Balanced Representation

Emerging teams like Comoros, Zimbabwe, and Equatorial Guinea continue to inspire with their resilience and determination. Comoros, a relatively new addition to the AFCON scene, has become a symbol of how smaller footballing nations can thrive on the big stage.

Equatorial Guinea and Uganda, both known for punching above their weight in past tournaments, bring their unique energy to Morocco. Meanwhile, Sudan and Benin claimed their spots on the final day of qualification, rounding out a diverse and competitive line-up.

As the countdown begins, anticipation builds across the continent and beyond. Who will emerge as Africa’s next footballing champion? December 2025 holds the answer.
