Residents Brace for Disruptions Amid Ongoing Water Supply Challenges
Overview of the Situation
Tshwane residents are set to endure another week of water interruptions as Magalies Water conducts maintenance on the Klipdrift Supply Scheme. This essential work, coupled with regular municipal maintenance, is expected to cause interruptions across various areas, including Pretoria, Modimolle, and Bela-Bela.
Areas Affected
Residents from Laudium, Atteridgeville, and Lotus Gardens have already taken to social media to report water outages, while others in Cornwall Hill and Doornkloof should prepare for disruptions during scheduled maintenance. The City of Tshwane has urged residents in these areas to store adequate water supplies ahead of time.
Additionally, suburbs like Soshanguve and Hammanskraal have reported significant declines in water reservoir levels. Vincent Mabena, a resident from Sekampaneng, shared his plight of surviving without a consistent water supply for four months, relying on municipal water tankers or purchasing water for daily needs.
Maintenance and Restrictions
City of Tshwane spokesperson Lindela Mashigo announced that planned maintenance at the Cornhill Reservoir will occur on Tuesday, lasting from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. He emphasized the importance of conserving water, noting that Rand Water restricts bulk meters when daily consumption exceeds allocated limits.
Power Outages Add to Residents’ Frustrations
Water woes have been compounded by power outages in parts of Pretoria Gardens, Akasia, Orchards, and the Pretoria CBD. Mashigo confirmed that technicians are working to restore power but could not provide an estimated restoration time.
Call to Action
Residents are encouraged to:
- Store water ahead of scheduled interruptions.
- Reduce daily water usage to avoid further restrictions.
- Report outages to local authorities for timely updates.
As Tshwane battles another week of water and power disruptions, residents are left grappling with the ongoing challenges of inconsistent services. Local authorities have urged households to remain patient and proactive, while long-term solutions to infrastructure issues remain a pressing need.
