South Africa’s Leader Prepares for Historic G20 Presidency Handover in Brazil
President Cyril Ramaphosa marked his 72nd birthday in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, amidst a busy schedule of bilateral meetings and preparations for the G20 Leaders’ Summit, which kicks off on Monday.
The South African president spent Sunday morning walking along the scenic Rio promenade before attending a series of engagements that highlight his active role in shaping global discussions. His entourage surprised him with a heartfelt rendition of “Happy Birthday” and a custom birthday cake before a preparatory briefing.
A Birthday on the Road
Despite the celebratory tone, Ramaphosa’s day was far from leisurely. Presidency spokesperson Vincent Magwenya noted, “He is in a very good space, energetic as always, with the usual attention to detail.” Ramaphosa donned a Mandela trademark shirt designed by Sonwabile Ndamase, adding a touch of South African heritage to his international duties.
The day’s agenda included bilateral meetings with prominent leaders such as Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and Singapore’s Prime Minister Lawrence Wong.
Paving the Way for South Africa’s G20 Leadership
This year’s G20 summit is particularly significant for South Africa. On December 1, the country will assume the G20 presidency, culminating in South Africa hosting the 2025 G20 Summit. Ramaphosa is set to play a pivotal role in steering this transition.
In the afternoon, the president participated in the launch of the “Leveraging the Potential of Renewables – The Road to Johannesburg Campaign” alongside Von der Leyen, emphasizing South Africa’s commitment to sustainability and renewable energy.
No Gifts, Just Focus on Duty
According to Magwenya, there were no elaborate gifts, as Ramaphosa preferred to focus on his work. He expressed gratitude for the surprise cake but maintained his dedication to South Africa’s agenda at the summit.
South Africa’s Global Stage Spotlight
Ramaphosa’s packed schedule exemplifies South Africa’s increasing prominence on the world stage. The upcoming G20 presidency provides an opportunity for the nation to influence key global policies and foster international collaboration.
As the president celebrates another year, his leadership continues to reflect South Africa’s aspirations for a stronger role in global affairs.
