Sandton City Fire on Thursday Safely Extinguished, Investigation Underway
A fire that broke out at Sandton City shopping centre on Thursday afternoon has been successfully contained with no injuries reported. The incident occurred just before noon, with Johannesburg Emergency Services (EMS) responding promptly to the call.
Fire Details
The fire was located on the external façade signage of the Sandton City parking area on Level 8. According to Xolile Khumalo, the spokesperson for Johannesburg EMS, the fire was swiftly extinguished, and thankfully, no one was injured. The signage, an illuminated LED display reading “Sandton City,” was the focal point of the blaze.
Cause of the Fire
As of now, the cause of the fire remains unknown. Khumalo emphasized that all fires pose potential dangers, whether structural or non-structural, and advised the public to avoid fire scenes for safety reasons.
Sandton City Response
In a statement, Sandton City confirmed that the affected parking area had been cordoned off, and minor damages were being assessed. However, the mall continued to operate as usual. The shopping centre assured the public that the safety and security of all shoppers, staff, and tenants remain a top priority, and management is collaborating with relevant teams to determine the fire’s cause.
Previous Fire Incidents in Johannesburg
This incident follows a series of fire-related events in the city. Last year, Nelson Mandela Square experienced a fire due to a faulty generator during load shedding, which led to power outages and a partial evacuation. Earlier this year, a tragic fire in Jeppestown claimed four lives and left others injured, allegedly caused by an illegal electrical connection.
As Sandton City continues to investigate the incident, the prompt response from emergency services has ensured that the fire did not escalate, and business continues as usual at the centre.
