Police Launch Manhunt After E-Hailing Driver Fatally Shot in Joburg
SHARE

The police in Johannesburg have launched an intensive manhunt following the brutal shooting of an e-hailing driver. The incident, which took place in the bustling streets of Johannesburg, has sent shockwaves throughout the community and raised concerns about the safety of e-hailing drivers and passengers alike. As authorities intensify their investigation, the city mourns yet another life lost to senseless violence.

The Tragic Incident

On Wednesday, an e-hailing driver was fatally shot in Berea, Johannesburg, sparking an immediate police response and a citywide manhunt for the suspects involved. According to initial reports, the dispute was over a cellphone. Eyewitnesses described a chilling scene: the man on the left is initially seen standing by the car’s opened door, while the other man is leaning into the driver’s side window. 4 gunshots are fired, leaving the driver declared immediately dead at the scene while the shooter walks away.

A shocking video capturing the aftermath of the shooting has since surfaced on social media, intensifying public concern and calls for swift justice. The footage shows the teo suspects searching the driver and taking both his cell phones and an unknown amount of cash, followed by gunshots. Unfortunately, despite the efforts of bystanders, the driver succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

E-Hailing Services Under Threat

This tragic shooting is one of many recent incidents highlighting the growing dangers faced by e-hailing drivers in South Africa, particularly in major urban areas like Johannesburg. With a rise in targeted crimes against drivers, many are left feeling unsafe while performing their jobs. E-hailing services, which are popular for their convenience and affordability, have become prime targets for violent crimes, including hijackings, robberies, and now, fatal shootings.

The safety concerns have not only impacted drivers but have also left passengers worried. Both Uber and Bolt, the leading e-hailing platforms in South Africa, have urged their drivers to be vigilant and to report any suspicious activity immediately. However, despite increased security measures, drivers remain vulnerable to attacks.

The Manhunt Begins

In response to the shooting, the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Johannesburg has launched an extensive manhunt for the suspects involved. Police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo, confirmed that investigators are combing through and gathering evidence from the scene to track down the culprits. Authorities have also appealed to the public for any information that could aid in the swift arrest of those responsible.

The Public Safety MMC, Dr Mgcini Tshwaku, condemned the incident.

“We are deeply disturbed by this heinous crime, allegedly committed over a cellphone. Our thoughts and condolences go out to the victim’s family and loved ones,” Tshwaku said in a statement on Thursday afternoon.

He also urged anyone with information to come forward and assist authorities in bringing the perpetrators to justice.

Investigators are also looking into whether the shooting was part of a broader trend of e-hailing violence targeting e-hailing drivers or if this was an isolated incident. With the rise in crime against ride-hailing operators, police are focusing on increasing their presence in hotspots known for these attacks.

Community Outrage and Safety Concerns

The Johannesburg community has expressed outrage and concern over the safety of e-hailing drivers and passengers. Many have taken to social media to voice their fears and frustrations, calling for stronger measures to protect drivers and tougher penalties for those committing violent crimes.

In response to the incident, various drivers’ associations have called for a citywide strike, demanding better security measures from both the government and e-hailing platforms. Some of the suggested measures include installing bulletproof windows in vehicles, equipping cars with emergency panic buttons, and increasing collaboration between the police and e-hailing companies.

What E-Hailing Companies Are Doing

Uber and Bolt, the two major players in South Africa’s e-hailing market, have made several efforts in recent years to improve safety for both drivers and passengers. These include introducing in-app emergency buttons, safety training for drivers, and partnerships with private security firms to respond to incidents faster.

However, critics argue that these measures are insufficient, especially considering the growing trend of violent crimes targeting e-hailing operators. There have been calls for the government to step in and regulate safety protocols for the e-hailing industry to ensure that drivers are better protected.

In a statement following the incident, Uber South Africa expressed their condolences to the family of the driver and reaffirmed their commitment to driver and passenger safety. They also pledged to work closely with law enforcement to assist in the investigation.

The Road Ahead

As the investigation into the fatal shooting continues, the spotlight remains on the broader issue of crime against e-hailing drivers in South Africa. While authorities ramp up efforts to apprehend the suspects in this tragic case, many are calling for a more comprehensive approach to ensure the safety of those working in the industry.

Until then, e-hailing drivers and passengers alike will remain on high alert, navigating the dangerous streets of Johannesburg while hoping for change. The outcome of this case could potentially lead to reforms in how safety is handled in the e-hailing sector, but for now, the Johannesburg community mourns the loss of yet another innocent life to senseless violence.
