Costs To Get Married at Home Affairs: Understanding the Fees and Process

Getting married at Home Affairs (DHA) makes it possible to register your marriage with minimal hassle officially. Home Affairs offers services to formalise your union, whether you’re opting for a traditional, civil, or customary marriage. If you’re wondering How Much It Costs to Get Married at Home Affairs, here’s everything you need to know, from fees to required documents and the process.

How Much It Costs to Get Married at Home Affairs?

The good news is that getting married at Home Affairs is free of charge. The Department of Home Affairs does not charge for the civil marriage service, which includes officiating the ceremony and registering the marriage. This makes it an affordable option for couples who want a legally recognized marriage without the expense of a private ceremony or venue hire.

However, there are additional costs you might incur for specific documents or processes related to the marriage:

  1. Marriage Certificate:
Upon registering your marriage, you’ll receive an abridged marriage certificate for free. If you require an unabridged marriage certificate (a more detailed document that includes both spouses’ details and is often required for visa applications or international purposes), there is a cost of R75.
  2. Copy of a Marriage Register:
If for any reason you require a copy of the marriage register, the cost is R70.
  3. Apostille/Authentication of Marriage Certificate:
If you plan to use your marriage certificate internationally, you may need it authenticated. The Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) handles this service for a fee, and it may vary based on processing times and specific requirements.

The Process of Getting Married at Home Affairs

To get married at Home Affairs, you need to follow these simple steps:

  1. Book an Appointment:
Contact your nearest Home Affairs office to schedule an appointment for your civil marriage. Make sure to confirm the specific requirements of your local office, as availability may vary.
  2. Required Documents:
On the day of your marriage, both you and your partner will need to present the following documents:
    • Valid IDs or passports (for both South African citizens and foreign nationals).
    • If either partner was previously married, you’ll need to present a final decree of divorce or death certificate of a former spouse.
    • If one or both partners are foreign nationals, additional documentation such as a Letter of No Impediment from your home country may be required.
  3. Marriage Officer and Witnesses:
A Home Affairs marriage officer will officiate the ceremony. You will need two witnesses over the age of 18 to sign the marriage register.
  4. Marriage Registration:
After the ceremony, the marriage officer will officially register your marriage with the DHA. You will receive a free abridged marriage certificate on the same day.

Customary Marriages and Civil Unions

Home Affairs also registers customary marriages (traditional marriages) and civil unions. The registration process for these marriages is similar, and the cost structure remains the same. For customary marriages, it’s important to comply with the requirements set out in the Recognition of Customary Marriages Act, which may include additional cultural obligations.

Why Get Married at Home Affairs?

Getting married at Home Affairs offers several benefits:

  • Cost-Effective: No fees for officiation or registration, making it a great option for budget-conscious couples.
  • Legal Recognition: Your marriage is officially recorded and recognized by the South African government.
  • Convenience: Home Affairs provides all the necessary documentation, ensuring your marriage is properly registered.

Final Thoughts on Home Affairs Marriage Costs

While the cost of getting married at Home Affairs is minimal, the service offers tremendous value by ensuring that your marriage is legally recognized. The lack of officiation fees makes it an attractive choice for many South Africans, while the additional costs for specific documents, like an unabridged marriage certificate, remain affordable.

If you’re planning to tie the knot soon, be sure to gather all required documents and book your appointment with Home Affairs in advance to avoid delays.
