South Africa Weather Forecast for Today - 22 September 2024
SHARE

Today, 22 September 2024, South Africa is experiencing varying weather conditions. In parts of the Eastern Cape, Western Cape, Free State, and KwaZulu-Natal, a cold front has brought significant disruptions, including snowfall and heavy rainfall. These regions are under a Level 6 weather warning, with snow and icy roads affecting mountain passes, particularly in the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal, making travel dangerous.

Today’s Weather Forecast for South Africa:

  1. Johannesburg (Gauteng)
    • Johannesburg is experiencing a chilly day with cloudy skies and scattered showers, particularly in the afternoon. Temperatures are expected to range between 10°C and 15°C. Thundershowers might develop later in the day as the cut-off low system affects the region.
  2. Cape Town (Western Cape)
    • Cape Town will have a cold and wet day. Showers are expected throughout the day, with strong winds and cold temperatures ranging between 10°C and 16°C. The weather is being influenced by the cold front and the low-pressure system, leading to rough seas and potential disruptions.
  3. Durban (KwaZulu-Natal)
    • Durban is also feeling the effects of the cold front, with cloudy skies and showers. The day will remain cool, with temperatures ranging from 14°C to 20°C. Strong winds are expected, especially along the coastal areas.
  4. Bloemfontein (Free State)
    • Bloemfontein will experience a very cold day with scattered showers and a chance of snow in the southern parts. Temperatures will drop to around 8°C, with highs reaching only 18°C. Snow is expected in some high-altitude areas.
  5. Pretoria (Gauteng)
    • Pretoria will follow similar patterns to Johannesburg, with cloudy and cool conditions. Expect scattered showers later in the day, with temperatures ranging from 13°C to 20°C.
  6. Gqeberha (Eastern Cape)
    • Gqeberha is under a weather warning with disruptive rain and strong winds. The city will experience heavy showers throughout the day, with temperatures between 11°C and 17°C. The nearby mountain passes may face closures due to snowfall.
  7. Mbombela (Mpumalanga)
    • The weather will be mostly cloudy with scattered showers throughout the day, particularly in the eastern and southern regions. Light snow may also fall over high-altitude areas in the southern parts. Temperatures will range from 10°C to 18°C, with cooler conditions over the highveld and escarpment.
  8. Polokwane (Limpopo)
    • Polokwane will see mostly cloudy and cool conditions with isolated showers and thundershowers in the afternoon. Temperatures will vary between 13°C and 23°C, making it one of the warmer provinces today compared to the southern regions affected by the cold front.
  9. Mahikeng (North West)
    • North West will experience partly cloudy weather with cool to warm temperatures. Scattered showers and thundershowers are possible, especially in the southeastern areas, as the day progresses. The temperature will range between 12°C and 22°C, with stronger winds expected in some regions.
  10. Kimberley (Northern Cape)
    • Kimberley will experience dry and warm conditions, with sunny skies for most of the day. Temperatures will range from 17°C to 29°C, but strong winds might make outdoor activities slightly challenging. Fire danger warnings are in place for parts of the Northern Cape due to these conditions.

Key Weather Alerts

Cold Front and Snow Warnings:

    • Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, Free State: A Level 6 weather warning is in effect due to disruptive snowfall and icy conditions. This could lead to road closures, especially in high-altitude areas like mountain passes.
    • Snowfall and Cold: The southern and eastern highlands of the Eastern Cape and Free State, as well as parts of KwaZulu-Natal, are expected to experience snow with extremely cold temperatures (below 10°C).

    Heavy Rain and Strong Winds:

      • Eastern Cape, Western Cape: Heavy rains are expected along with strong winds, causing possible flooding in low-lying areas. Rough seas may disrupt port activities along the coastline.
      • Northern Cape, Free State, and North West: Strong, damaging winds are forecast, potentially leading to hazardous driving conditions and flying debris.

      Fire Danger:

        • Northern Cape: Extremely high fire danger conditions are expected, making it risky for outdoor fires, as dry and windy conditions prevail.

Residents are advised to stay updated on local weather warnings, avoid unnecessary travel in affected areas, and follow safety precautions to mitigate risks from extreme weather conditions.
